HAMDEN, Conn. - Despite losing its last three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games by a combined seven goals, the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team is still in contention for the sixth and final spot in next week's championship tournament. In order to qualify, the Bobcats will need a win in Saturday's regular season finale against Monmouth.
Quinnipiac will also need Niagara to lose to Manhattan in a game that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT – L, 11-9 at Manhattan
A tenacious defensive effort in the second half and five second-half saves for Allie Kelsey were not enough for Quinnipiac to complete the comeback in an 11-9 loss at Manhattan Saturday evening. Allison Kuhn and Megan Szawlowski each tallied three goals and an assist in the loss. Kuhn's three goals and four points move her into tenth and ninth, respectively, in Quinnipiac's single-season record book. The senior now has 39 goals and 18 assists this season for 57 points with one regular season game remaining.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Monmouth used a dominant effort on both sides of the ball to earn its fifth conference win of the year and guarantee a spot in the upcoming MAAC Tournament on Wednesday, dispatching Manhattan, 19-5. Monmouth's offense exploded as the junior tandem of Allison Turturro and Nicole Ceraso combined for 16 total points. Turturro recorded a career-high eight goals while Ceraso set the Monmouth all-time record assists record with 105 assists after dishing out seven helpers in the game. Monmouth senior goalie Riley Brager made 10 saves in the contest, including eight in the first half as the Hawks built a 9-2 lead. Jenny Staines and Caroline Bleck also chipped in with three goals apiece.
YOU KUHN DO IT!
Allison Kuhn's 39 goals are tied for 10th-most in a single season in Bobcats history. With one goal on Saturday, Kuhn becomes the 10th player in program history to record a 40-goal season. Her 57 points are tied for seventh-most in a single season and three points would make her the seventh player in Quinnipiac history to record 60 points in a season.
CAN YOU DEEG IT?
Freshman Maddie Deegan's five-goal performance against Siena runs her rookie year totals to 16 goals and four assists. The five goals were most by a Quinnipiac freshman since Allison Kuhn scored five against Manhattan on April 23, 2016.
ROAD WARRIORS
Four of Quinnipiac's five wins this season have come in enemy territory (Stetson, Hartford, Canisius, Iona). The Bobcats have not won four road contests in the same season since winning five in the 2012 season. That year resulted in a 9-7 overall record and a trip to the NEC Semifinals.
MOVIN' ON UP
A win over Monmouth on Saturday will give Quinnipiac six wins for the first time since finishing the 2013 season with a 7-9 record. The Bobcats are one of just six of the 115 NCAA D1 Women's Lacrosse teams in the nation have increased their win total in each of the last four seasons and will extend that streak to five seasons with one more victory.
NEW NEWS
This year's victory over Canisius was the first for Quinnipiac over the Golden Griffins since joining the MAAC. The last Bobcats' win over Canisius came in 2002.
HEARTBREAKERS, DREAM MAKERS
The Bobcats have become familiar with tight contests, especially in MAAC play, playing 13 one-goal contests over the last three seasons. All four combined losses to Marist and Fairfield in 2018 and 2019 have been one goal games, while four of Quinnipiac's first five conference games this season were decided by a goal.
THAT'S OFFENSIVE!
Quinnipiac's 19 goals against Hartford was the highest single-game total for the Bobcats since a 20-11 win over LIU Brooklyn on April 5, 2013.
FREEDOM!
Quinnipiac is one of the best teams in the nation when it comes to converting free position opportunities, ranking 11th in Division I and first in the MAAC with a 48.1 percent conversion rate. The Bobcats scored eight free position goals in the win over Hartford, the most in a game in the program's Division I history.
GET SWAZZY WITH IT
Junior Megan Szawlowski has tallied 32 goals and 17 assists in her first season as a Bobcat. The Central Connecticut State transfer has taken 72 shots, won 24 draw controls, and currently ranks 45th in career points per game among all active Division I players with 3.32 points per contest.
KUHN JOINS CENTURY CLUB
Senior attack Allison Kuhn became only the ninth player in school history to record 100 career goals with her two-goal outing at Hartford. She recorded her 100th career point against Canisius last season and now has 166 points (119 goals, 47 assists) midway through her senior year. Her 57 points (39 goals, 18 assists) this season moved her into sixth place on the Bobcats' all-time points list, fifth all-time in goals, and tied for seventh all-time in assists.
STELLAR SAMI
Transfer graduate student goalkeeper Sami Walters ranks 18th among all active Division I women's lacrosse goalkeepers with an 9.45 goals against average in her career. Walters has posted the second-best save percentage in the MAAC (.480) and fifth-best goals against average (11.63) this season and has the 27th-best save percentage in the nation.
ATTACKING THE MAAC
Kuhn and graduate student Sami Walters both earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances at Stetson. Kuhn was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring five goals, including a double-overtime game-winner. She also added an assist, two draw controls, and a ground ball to her stat line. Walters, a transfer from UMass, was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high nine saves in the win. After entering the game at halftime, the graduate student also picked up six ground balls in her Quinnipiac debut.
MAN DOWN BUT NOT OUT
Quinnipiac played man-down for 14 minutes in this season's game at Brown. In that time span, the Bobcats scored a shorthanded goal and did not allow Brown a single tally.
KOTO-WINS
Head Coach Tanya Kotowicz's squad has tallied more combined wins over the last two seasons than any two-year span since 2013.
UP TO THE CHALLENGE
The 16-game regular-season slate runs from February to April, and will feature two opponents that reached the 2018 NCAA Tournament. In addition, seven of Quinnipiac's opponents won at least nine games each a year ago. The program's seven regular season home competitions feature non-conference matchups with Brown, LIU Brooklyn, and defending Northeast Conference Champion Wagner College, who won a first round game in last year's NCAA Tournament.
