HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to MAAC play this weekend after the bye week as the Bobcats travel to Siena to take on the Saints in a three-game series beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Scouting Siena
The Saints have struggled at times this season and have lost four straight heading into this weekend's series, owning a 9-23 record with a 4-8 mark in the MAAC. Siena was swept in their last MAAC series from April 13-14 at Manhattan. Siena is also 5-13 against common opponents to the Bobcats this season. Brendan Conley leads the team with a Brendan Conley has a .349 batting average and is 15 for 43 with nine extra-base hits and 10 RBIs. As a team, Siena owns a .219 batting average in 32 games. Starter Brendan White is 2-5 in nine starts this season but owns a 2.29 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched. Tommy Miller also is slated to start, this weekend, owning a 4.30 ERA with a 3-2 record to go with 56 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. Siena's has a 4.88 ERA has a staff and .299 opponent batting average.

Quinnipiac owns an 8-11 all-time record against Siena dating back to the 1999 season when the Bobcats joined the Division I ranks. Last season, the Bobcats picked up three wins against the Saints. After taking two games in the three-game series in the regular season, the Bobcats earned a 7-6 win in extra innings to advance in the MAAC Tournament last season.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats split their midweek games this past week with a big win against Yale before falling to Bryant in the last game. Quinnipiac overcame an early five-run deficit against the Bulldogs to and ultimately scored four runs over the final three innings to win, 12-8. The Bobcats scored early Wednesday against the Bulldogs but Bryant pulled away with two big innings to pick up the 14-5 win.
Need More of That
Evan Vulgamore continues to be one of the biggest bright spots for the Bobcats this season as he has recorded a hit and an RBI in eight straight games. His eight-game hitting streak is the second-longest hitting streak of his career since a 12-game streak to open the 2018 season. So far this season, Vulgamore is first on the team with a .316 batting average, .544 slugging percentage, 12 doubles and 27 RBIs while his four home runs are third. He is also ninth in the MAAC in batting average, fifth in slugging percentage, ninth in runs scored, ninth in RBIs and sixth in doubles.
Bend but Don't Break
Colton Bender, a Buster Posey Award nominee, has been on a roll the last few games as he has seven RBIs in his last three games as well as five hits in 12 at-bats. Bender now has career-highs in RBIs, hits and runs scored as he is approaching his freshman year games played totals. He threw out a runner trying to steal third on Tuesday for his seventh caught stealing of the season, tied for seventh in the MAAC.
Call Me Maves
Kyle Maves had a pair of impressive midweek performances as he recorded three hits in each game and had reached base in eight straight plate appearances at one point. He has seven hits in his last 11 at bats and has come home to score eight runs in his last three games. Maves is now tied for ninth in the MAAC with 25 runs scored and tied for first with 13 stolen bases.
Lucky Lutz
Dylan Lutz recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games this week for the Bobcats as he had three hits against Yale before a two-hit game vs. Bryant. Lutz recorded his first home run of the season and third of his career with a blast against Yale on Tuesday. He now has seven multi-hit games this season.
Pullin' a Poulin
Tyler Poulin is slated for his first start in two weeks this weekend as he looks to take the mound against Siena. Poulin recorded just his second loss of the season in his last start vs. Canisius. He currently ranks ninth in the MAAC with 47 strikeouts and 10th with 50 innings pitched while he is tied for the most wins in the conference.
Get to Work
Andrew Workman has work his way into becoming one of the best relievers in the MAAC this season as he Is fourth with a 1.35 ERA, ninth with a .191 opponent batting average and is tied for fourth with four saves. Workman has not allowed an earned run in 22 innings and 12 appearances dating back to March 13 at Florida Atlantic. He has allowed just four earned runs in 26.2 innings this season.
Easing Enns
Chris Enns recorded his third win of the season last Sunday as he didn't allow a run in a start for the first time this season. He scattered five hits in his five innings of work and struck out six batters, his third-most in a start this season. Enns now owns a 4.26 ERA to go with his 3-4 record and a career-high 39 strikeouts.
Offensive Power
Quinnipiac has been one of the top offensive teams in the MAAC as it comes into the weekend with a .275 team batting average, trailing only Marist's .281 clip. The Bobcats have come around to score a league-high 204 runs in 35 games, averaging 5.83 runs per game. The Bobcats have also been one of the top power teams, recording the most doubles (72) and third-most home runs (20) to give them the second-best slugging percentage at .398. Quinnipiac has used its wheels all season long, stealing 70 bases which is 14 more than Marist's 56.
Pitching Dominance
Not only has Quinnipiac been one of the best hitting teams, but the Bobcats have also been among the better pitching staffs in the MAAC. The Bobcats own the second-best opponent batting average at .272 and the 260 strikeouts are third in the conference while the team's three shutouts this season are tied with Siena for the most in the conference.
