HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team continues its five-game road stretch this weekend as the Bobcats are in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to take on the La Salle Explorers in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at Hank DeVincent Field.
Scouting La Salle
The Explorers come into the weekend with an overall record of 16-17 and have just three wins in their last eight games, including a 13-4 win last time out against Maryland Eastern Shore. La Salle is 3-2 against mutual opponents this season, including a 2-2 record against Rider and 1-0 mark against Saint Peter's. Peyton Sorrels leads the team with a .363 batting average on the season and 10 stolen bases as well as 45 hits, nine doubles and 32 runs scored. Ben Faso has five home runs and 14 total extra-base hits to go along with 35 RBIs to lead the Explorers at the dish. Pitching has struggled as the team owns a 6.27 ERA in 32 games. Saturday's probable starters Aiden Frye (1-2, 5.31 ERA) and Colin Scanlon (2-2, 5.24 ERA) have combined for 56 strikeouts in 63 innings.
All-Time vs. La Salle
This weekend marks the first all-time meetings between the two teams.
Buster Posey Award Watch List
Sunday's walk-off hero Colton Bender was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List, an award presented annually to the nation's top catcher. Previously named the Johnny Bench Award, Bender is the second Bobcats catcher to be named to the watch list and first since Lou Iannotti in 2016.
Alumni in the Pros
This past week, the minor league season kicked off for three Quinnipiac baseball alums who are competing at various levels of professional baseball. Thomas Jankins and Matthew Batten are beginning the season in Double-A of the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres, respectively, while Robbie Hitt is in Single-A with the Brewers.
Brian's Song
Brian Moskey snapped a three-game hitless streak on Tuesday with a 3 for 5 showing at Hartford before adding two hits at Boston College to give him five hits in his last eight at-bats. With a pair of doubles, he is now tied for ninth all-time with 40 doubles his career as he tied Nate Noyes '00 and Matthew Batten '17. He is 16 hits away from recording 200 hits in his career.
Slugging Scafariello
Liam Scafariello hit his fifth home run of the season on Tuesday at Hartford to give him 36 in his career as he pulls within three of tying the record of 39 set by Joe Zangari '00. Scafariello has 11 extra-base hits this season with six doubles and five home runs to go with his 15 RBIs.
Evan Almighty
Evan Vulgamore has hits in his last three games as he is 5 for 12 in that stretch with four runs scored and four RBIs. Vulgamore hit his 11th home run of the season on Wednesday at Boston College to tie his career-high from last season in just 25 games. Vulgamore has driven in at least one RBI in three straight games.
Lucky Lutz
Dylan Lutz has a streak of three straight two-hit games as he heads into this weekend's series, making him 6 for 15 in that stretch with three runs scored and two RBIs. He is already over halfway to his games played total from last season and has 10 RBIs, just four shy of a career-high.
Working Workman
Andrew Workman continued his dominance out of the bullpen at Boston College as he allowed just one unearned run in 1.2 innings pitched. With an unearned run allowed, that extends Workman's streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 18.2 innings over his last nine appearances.
