Young Becomes Second Player in Program History to Earn Conference POTY Award
ALBANY, NY – Quinnipiac men's basketball graduate guard Cameron Young (Los Angeles, Calif.) has been named 2018-19 MAAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year, as announced by the conference on Friday morning at the Renaissance Albany Hotel during the MAAC Basketball Postseason Awards Show.
Young was a unanimous choice for the league's most prestigious individual award, and is just the second player in Quinnipiac program history to be named conference player of the year. Justin Rutty was named NEC Player of the Year in 2009-10.
Young – the MAAC's lone unanimous selection for the First Team – joined Zaid Hearst (2014-15) and Ike Azotam (2013-14) earlier this week as the third Quinnipiac student-athlete to be selected to the All-MAAC First Team. He finished the regular season averaging a conference-best 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, shooting 201-of-424 (47.4 percent) from the floor. Young heads in to the postseason ranking No. 12 nationally in scoring (23.0 PPG) and No. 19 nationally in made free throws (163). He also leads the MAAC in made 3-point field goals (91).
The graduate guard scored 20+ points in 15 of 18 MAAC games this season, averaging 25.8 points per game in conference action. He shot 51.3 percent from the floor in MAAC action. He scored a MAAC-record 55 total points, leading Quinnipiac men's basketball past Siena, 107-100, in triple overtime on Feb. 17, at the Times Union Center. Young's 55 points are the most of any student-athlete in the NCAA so far in 2018-19, and also sets a Quinnipiac Division I program record. The graduate guard shot 15-for-24 from the floor, grabbing 10 rebounds in 53+ minutes played.
Young also broke his own Division I single-season scoring record (622) in a win over Monmouth on Feb. 24, and also shattered Quinnipiac's single-season record for 3-pointers – which was previously set by James Johnson in 2010-11. For the season, Young earned four MAAC Player of the Week honors—all coming since January 14.
Young – who held a 5.2 points per game advantage over the rest of the league – was named MAAC Player of the Week four separate times this season. Quinnipiac men's basketball begins postseason play on Saturday, March 9, playing in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 MAAC Tournament at 7:00 p.m. vs. either No. 6 Monmouth or No. 11 Niagara.
