Marrero Shines Sunday as Baseball Sweeps Twin Bill vs. Saint Peter's

Bobcats Take Down Peacocks 5-4 and 2-0 to Sweep First MAAC Series of Season
HAMDEN, Conn. – Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) had a critical day for the Quinnipiac baseball team as he finished the doubleheader with two home runs and five RBIs as the Bobcats completed their first weekend sweep of the season with wins of 5-4 and 2-0 over Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon.
In game one of the doubleheader, Marrero hit a two-run home run in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead and later in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie as part of his first collegiate two-home run game. Later in game two, Marrero broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single to propel the Bobcats to the victory.
Marrero also had a key outfield assist in the top of the fifth inning in the first game of the doubleheader as he throughout the Peacocks' Hunter Mason at home to end the inning as he attempted to score from second and take the lead on Edwin Feliciano's single through the left side of the infield.
Freshman Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) stole four bases on the day, including three in the first game, while Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) finished the day with three hits, an RBI and a stolen base.
Christian Nicolosi (Stony Point, New York) made his first start since March 25, 2017, and shined in his five innings of work in game two, striking out five battings and allowing no runs on just three hits and no walks.

EIGHTH INNING

- Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) walked to lead off the bottom of the inning before stealing second and third to put himself in scoring position
- With Maves on third, Marrero pulled a ball down the left field line that stayed for a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead
- Moskey reached on an infield single and stole second to put himself in scoring position
- Cruz ripped a single to center field that scored Moskey to make it 3-0 Bobcats
- Maves singled to center to reach base off new pitcher Nicholas Gennarelli and promptly stole second for his third stolen base of the game
- With a 1-1 count, Marrero once again hit a two-run home run as he crushed a pitch to left center field that broke the 3-3 tie after the Peacocks had scored three runs in the top half of the inning

EIGHTH INNING
- With two outs in the inning, Maves sparked the Bobcats only run of the game as he pulled a double that short-hopped the right field fence and put himself in scoring position
- Marrero stepped into the box and with an 0-2 count, lined a single to right field that scored Maves to take a 1-0 lead
- Marrero proceeded to steal second base before a Samuel LaChance (Dover, New Hampshire) walk to put a pair of runners on base
- Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) followed with a single to centerfield to score Marrero for an insurance run and take a 2-0 lead.
- Marrero's two-home run game was the first of his career and he now has a career-high four home runs this season
- Marrero also extended his hitting streak to seven games, while he has scored a run and drove in an RBI in four straight games.
- He also stole a base in game two of the doubleheader as he now has a career-high 11 stolen bases in 19 games this season
- As a team, Quinnipiac has 44 stolen bases this season to put them on pace to break the single-season stolen base record of 83 from the 1982 team.
- Maves upped his batting average to .306 on the season as he recorded hits in all three games this weekend
- In Sunday's doubleheader, Maves was a combined 2 for 5 with two walks, three runs scored and four stolen bases as he is now 9 for 9 in steal attempts
- Cruz totaled three hits on the day, including a pair of hits in the second game of the doubleheader
- Cruz had an RBI single in game one before recording a caught stealing in game two as part of an impressive all-around day
- Anthony Ambrosino (Howard Beach, New York) earned his first career victory in game two with a three-inning relief appearance of Nicolosi as he struck out two batters and allowed just two hits
- Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey) also recorded his first career victory as he tossed 1.1 innings of relief following Arthur Correira's (Rehoboth, Massachusetts) start
- Robert Lewis (Seaford, New York) and Andrew Workman (Pound Ridge, New York) each picked up their second saves of the season with the sweep of the twin bill.
- The Bobcats have a pair of home midweek games slated for this week as they are set to host Rhode Island on Tuesday and Dartmouth on Wednesday at the QU Baseball Field.
- First pitch is set for 3 p.m. for each game.
