Scouting Saint Peter's
The Peacocks have struggled throughout the 2019 season as they come into MAAC play with an overall record of 0-14. Most recently, the Peacocks fell in a pair of midweek games against Albany and at Wagner this weekend, falling to the Great Danes 9-7 in Jersey City before losing at the Seahawks, 13-3. John Gavura leads the Peacocks with a .318 batting average in limited starts while Peter Ferony leads the team with 17 total his and 13 RBIs as he has started all 14 games. As a team, Saint Peter's is batting .240. On the rubber, reliever Steve Esptein has a 2.45 ERA in seven appearances, striking out 13 batters in 14.2 innings. Starter Joe Albunia has the lowest ERA among Peacocks pitchers with a start at 8.03. Opponents are batting .356 against Saint Peter's while the staff combines for a 12.46 ERA.
All-Time vs. Saint Peter's
Quinnipiac is 13-1 all-time against Saint Peter's dating back to the 2002 season and 11-1 against the Peacocks since joining the MAAC in 2014. Last season, Quinnipiac swept the season-series with the Peacocks down in Jersey City, outscoring Saint Peter's 42-2 in the series and highlighted by a 28-2 win in the series finale. Saint Peter's last win against Quinnipiac came in 2015.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats traveled to Yale Field on Wednesday to take on the Yale Bulldogs but the Bobcats came up short, 11-2, in a loss to the rival Bulldogs. After the Bobcats gave up 11 runs through the first three innings, Blake DeCarr came out of the bullpen and shut down the Yale batters as he allowed just three hits in 5.1 innings of relief. Andre Marrero was 2 for 4 at the dish, hitting an RBI triple in the eighth inning before stealing home for the second run of the game.
Marrero's Mashing
Andre Marrero has been one of the Bobcats go-to weapons this season after his 2 for 4 day at Yale as he recorded Quinnipiac's first triple of the season. He is second on the team with five extra-base hits while his steal of home was his team-leading sixth of the season. Marrero is batting ,295 on the season with 18 hits, 12 runs scored and eight RBIs.
DeCarr's Dominance
Blake DeCarr was masterful out of the bullpen despite the large deficit at Yale as he quieted the Bulldogs. He struck out a career-high seven batters out of the bullpen in his 5.1 innings of three-hit ball, giving him one of the best relief appearances by a Bobcats pitcher in the past five seasons.
Player of the Week
For a third consecutive week, the Bobcats had a player recognized during the MAAC Weekly Awards selection as Evan Vulgamore was named the league's Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Vulgamore follows Andre Marrero (March 12) as player of the week and Chris Enns (March 5) was also honored as the pitcher of the week.
On the Verge of a Milestone
Head coach John Delaney comes into the weekend with 99 career victories, putting him one win away from becoming the third Quinnipiac head coach in program history to record 100 career wins. Delaney will join his predecessor Dan "Skip" Gooley (439 wins) and Earl Matthewson (174 wins) as the only coaches in program history with 100 career wins. Matthewson coached nine season from 1988-96 while Gooley coached 24 seasons in two stints from 1977-87 and 2002-14 before Delaney took over in 2015.
High Voltage
Evan Vulgamore has been one of the Bobcats' best offensive weapons through the first 16 games this season, and he really heated up this week against Florida Atlantic and the competition at the Spider Invitational as he racked up 10 hits. Vulgamore had multiple hits in four straight games, a double in four straight games, as well as five runs scored and four RBIs in that span. On the season, Vulgamore leads the Bobcats with a .339 batting average, .400 on base percentage, .581 slugging percentage, 21 hits, 15 runs, nine doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs.
Epic Comeback
In Quinnipiac's extra-inning loss to Toledo, the Bobcats scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a 7-2 deficit and tie the game to force extra innings. Despite an Anthony Cruz in the top of the 10th inning, the Bobcats could not hang on to the lead as they gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the 10th to fall, 9-8. Quinnipiac has scored 42 of its 86 runs in the final three innings of games this season.
First Career Home Runs
Anthony Cruz and Ian Ostberg both had memorable weekends as they each hit their first career home runs in back-to-back games. Cruz hit his first career home run in the 10th inning against the Toledo Rockets before Ostberg smashed his first home run against Bryant with a ninth inning blast as he tried to spark the offense. Six different Bobcats have hit home runs this season.
Correira's Making Memories
Arthur Correira picked up the first win of his career with a spectacular start for the Bobcats on Sunday as he struck out eight batters in his six innings of work, allowing just one earned run on two hits and two walks. Correira has been solid in his first three career starts, sporting a 2.35 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and has 15 strikeouts in just 15.1 innings of work. All three Quinnipiac weekend starters are averaging at least a strikeout per inning.
Saving the Day
Andrew Workman was spectacular in his first save of the season at Richmond on Sunday, capping off Correira's start with five strikeouts in two innings of work to earn the save. Workman has been solid in six appearances out of the bullpen with a 3.37 ERA and a .238 opponent batting average.
