HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 5/5 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is set for the 2018-19 playoff push as the Bobcats open the ECAC Hockey Tournament with a quarterfinal series against the Brown Bears at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats swept Brown and Yale on the road to close out the regular season and clinch a share of the Cleary Cup as ECAC Hockey Regular Season Champions in the 4-1 win at Yale. Quinnipiac beat Brown and Yale 4-1 each night as the Bobcats overcame a one point deficit to Cornell in the league standings.
Scouting Brown
Despite losing to both Quinnipiac and Princeton to close out the regular season, the Bears remained among the league's hottest teams as they earned the No. 8 seed and hosted a quarterfinal series. Brown took on Princeton last weekend, winning 3-0 before finishing the sweep with a three-overtime 6-5 victory against Princeton, the longest game in both teams' history. Tommy Marchin continues to lead the team with nine goals, 15 assists and 24 points while both Zach Giuttari and Tristan Crozier are tied for second on the team with 18 points. Luke Kania had secured the starting job with 16 games played and 16 starts this season during a Gavin Nieto injury, going 4-8-4 with a 2.88 GAA and .912 save percentage. Nieto made his return between the pipes in the first round of playoffs, posting a 1.83 GAA and .916 save percentage as he picked up his second shutout of the season
All-Time vs. Brown
The Bobcats returned to the win column against the Bears in the penultimate game of the 2018-19 regular season with a 4-1 victory. Quinnipiac improved to 24-8-6 all-time in 38 games against Brown. Quinnipiac and Brown are set to meet in the playoffs for the first time since the first round of the 2016-17 playoffs when the Bobcats swept the Bears in a lopsided series. The Bobcats are 8-2 all-time against the Bears in the ECAC Hockey playoffs since joining the league for the 2015-16 season.
National Polls
Quinnipiac heads into the playoffs ranks No. 5 in both national polls for a third consecutive week. The Bobcats are up to a season-high 821 points in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll as they increased 16 points from last week while the Bobcats moved up nine points to remain fifth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll with 384 points.
Monthly Awards
Wyatt Bongiovanni was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month after a fantastic February where he led all ECAC Hockey rookies with six goals, three power-play goals, nine points and a total of 41 shots on goal. Bongiovanni recorded points in four of the eight games in February.
Cleary Cup
Quinnipiac shot back up the ECAC Hockey standings over a wild final month as the league regular season standings were as close as ever. The Bobcats swept the final regular season weekend to clinch a share of the Cleary Cup as regular season champions for the fourth time in the past seven seasons. Only Union has accomplished that feat in recent history, winning four in seven seasons from 2010-11 through 2016-17. Prior to that, Harvard won four in six years and five in seven years from 1987-88 through 1993-94. The Bobcats have now won Cleary Cups in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019.
Bracketology
Due to the Bobcats surge at the end of the season, Quinnipiac has played itself just outside of the final No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats come into the weekend slate to be the top No. 2 seed, being placed in the East Regional for a first round series against Providence. Also in the region are Minnesota Duluth and Harvard. Quinnipiac is a lock to make the NCAA Tournament according to the latest bracketology reports.
Mike Richter Award Semifinalist
Goaltender Andrew Shortridge is beginning to receive postseason recognition for the work he has done throughout the season between the pipes. Earlier this week, Shortridge was named a semifinalist for the 2019 Mike Richter Award, given annually to the nation's top goaltender. Shortridge is the first semifinalist from Quinnipiac since the award was first handed out in 2014. He is one of two players from ECAC Hockey while six of the 10 semifinalists are juniors.
ECAC Hockey Major Award Finalists
Over the past week, ECAC Hockey has begun announcing the finalists for its major awards to be handed out next week. The Bobcats have been well represented among the major award finalists as Rand Pecknold was a finalist for Coach of the Year, Chase Priskie was a finalist for the Best Defensive Defenseman Award, Peter DiLiberatore was a finalist for the Rookie of the Year Award and Shortridge was a finalist for the Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year Award.
Recall Alert
Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player Connor Clifton '17 was recalled to the Boston Bruins on an emergency basis for Thursday night's game at Winnipeg where he was a +1 with two shots on goal and a hit in 12:28 of ice time. This is the second time this season Clifton has cracked the Bruins' NHL lineup. If he remains with the team through Tuesday, it would mark the first time two former Bobcats were on the ice in an NHL game going against each other as the Bruins face Devon Toews and the New York Islanders on Long Island.
Shortridge Numbers
On the season, Shortridge has been one of the best goaltenders in the nation as he leads the country with a 1.39 GAA and .944 save percentage after allowing just one goal in each game over the weekend. He has four shutouts on the season but has not allowed a goal in six of his starts. He is also fourth in the nation with a .783 winning percentage with his 17-4-2 record.
