HAMDEN, Conn. - Defending Northeast Conference champion Wagner College visits Connecticut for a Friday afternoon tilt with the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The 1:30 p.m. contest will be played at Smith Field on the campus of Wesleyan College in Middletown, Conn.
LAST TIME OUT – L, 17-7 at Hofstra
Quinnipiac gave Hofstra a true test for 30 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, but eventually dropped the non-conference matchup by a score of 17-7 in Hempstead, New York. The Bobcats scored three goals in the first three minutes of the game and trailed by just a goal, 8-7, at the halftime break but Hofstra's defensive effort in the second half proved to be the difference. Allison Kuhn and Megan Szawlowski combined for six goals and two assists to pace the offensive output for Quinnipiac. Jenna Henningsen also scored and Sami Walters made 14 saves in the loss.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
Like the Bobcats, Wagner's previous contest was against Hofstra. The Seahawks fell, 17-4, in Hempstead on Tuesday, two days prior to the Bobcats' meeting with the Pride. Madeline Seims and Victoria Tucci each scored one goal each half as the sophomore midfield combination accounted for all four of the Seahawks' goals. In addition to her two goals, Seims came up with a team-best four draw controls on the afternoon. Defensively, senior Maddie Courtney registered team highs with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Week Kelsey Fee recorded six saves.
ATTACKING THE MAAC
Senior Allison Kuhn and graduate student Sami Walters both earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances at Stetson. Kuhn was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring five goals, including a double-overtime game-winner. She also added an assist, two draw controls, and a ground ball to her stat line. Walters, a transfer from UMass, was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high nine saves in the win. After entering the game at halftime, the graduate student also picked up six ground balls in her Quinnipiac debut.
GET SWAZZY WITH IT
Junior Megan Szawlowski has tallied 13 goals in her first five games as a Bobcat. The Central Connecticut State transfer has taken 29 shots and won 10 draw controls.
NEWBIES ON THE BOARD
Freshmen Sophie Spencer and Maddie Deegan both scored a goal in their collegiate debuts against Stetson, while classmate Gabby Beckett added a goal and an assist against Brown. All three freshmen scored against Yale on Wednesday, while Deegan added another pair of goals in the win over LIU Brooklyn.
KUHN JOINS CENTURY CLUB
Senior attack Allison Kuhn recorded her 100th career point against Canisius last season and now has 132 points (97 goals, 35 assists) early in her senior year. She is on pace to become only the ninth player in school history to record 100 career goals, as she stands 3 away. Her 23 points (17 goals, 6 assists) this season moved her into 11th place on the Bobcats' all-time points list, ninth all-time in goals, and tenth all-time in assists.
MAN DOWN BUT NOT OUT
Quinnipiac played man-down for 14 minutes in this season's game at Brown. In that time span, the Bobcats scored a shorthanded goal and did not allow Brown a single tally.
STELLAR SAMI
Transfer graduate student goalkeeper Sami Walters ranks second among all active Division I women's lacrosse goalkeepers with an 8.69 goals against average in her career.
ALLIE KELSEY, HOMECOMING WARRIOR
Playing in her home state, junior goalkeeper Allie Kelsey made eight saves against Brown, three shy of her career-best. She added eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, one ground ball short of tying Quinnipiac's program record.
MOVIN' ON UP
The Bobcats are one of just six of the 115 NCAA D1 Women's Lacrosse teams in the nation have increased their win total in each of the last four seasons.
TRENDING UPWARDS
Head Coach Tanya Kotowicz's squad has tallied more combined wins over the last two seasons than any two-year span since 2013.
UP TO THE CHALLENGE
The 16-game regular-season slate runs from February to April, and will feature two opponents that reached the 2018 NCAA Tournament. In addition, seven of Quinnipiac's opponents won at least nine games each a year ago. The program's seven regular season home competitions feature non-conference matchups with Brown, LIU Brooklyn, and defending Northeast Conference Champion Wagner College, who won a first round game in last year's NCAA Tournament.
