Liberty Softball Classic Announces Schedule Change

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Quinnipiac softball team is set to play five games in Lynchburg this weekend at the Liberty Softball Classic. Liberty University announced a schedule change for the tournament due to weather - Bobcats will now play the Flames on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m., instead of Sunday, March 3.

Bobcats Last Time Out
Quinnipiac had a week off after the first tournament of the season in Madeira Beach, Fla. The Bobcats went 2-3 beating Akron and Holy Cross and dropping games against South Dakota, Central Arkansas and Ball State. Quinnipiac put up 11 runs in the win against Akron.
Otero On the Move
Freshman Alexis Otero ignited her first-year campaign by leading the team with a .400 average, six runs, one doubles, one homerun and three RBIs. She .667 slugging percentage and .438 on-base percentage. The Chula Vista native earned the MAAC Player and Rookie of the Week for play Feb. 11-17. Otero currently leads the MAAC in batting average, runs and slugging percentage. She has also been solid on defense with a 1.000 fielding percentage, 28 putouts and 2 assists.
Leading the MAAC
Quinnipiac currently holds the top four spots in the MAAC statistical standings for batting average - Otero in first (.400), sophomore Kayla Jensen in second (.368), sophomore Brighid Douglas in third (.316) and freshman Bridget Nasir in fourth (.268).
Scouting the Competition
The Bobcats will take on Liberty, Sacred Heart, Cleveland State, Rutgers and Robert Morris in the Liberty Softball Classic.
The Flames will host the tournament and come into the weekend with an 8-6 record overall. Liberty is currently on a five-game winning streak after beating Bucknell on Feb. 24. Amber Bishop leads the Flames with a .391 average with 12 runs, two doubles, four homeruns and six RBIs.
The Sacred Heart Pioneers will travel to Lynchburg with a 2-2 record after competing in the Gardner-Webb University Tournament. The Pioneers defeated Hartford and Oakland by putting up 21 runs and allowing 10 through two games. Sacred Heart lost 18-0 to the host school and 7-2 against Loyola (IL). Katelyn Christian leads SHU with a .417 batting average through four games, hitting two homeruns with three runs and four RBIs.
Cleveland State stands at 1-7 overall after playing in the East Carolina Pirate Clash and Hilltopper Classic. The Vikings won 8-7 against the Wagner Seahawks in extra innings. Kelly Hysong leads the Vikings with a .344 average and has recorded five RBIs, three homeruns, two doubles and four runs.
Rutgers is 6-9 overall and has played the most games out of any team in the Liberty Softball Classic this weekend. They competed in the Mercer Invitational (3-2), Texas A&M Invitational (1-4) and FIU Panther Invitational (2-3). The Scarlet Knights will take on Virginia on Thursday, Feb. 28 before the Liberty Softball Classic. Jess Hughes lead the team with a .360 average and has tallied 14 runs, five doubles, three homeruns and three RBIs.
The Robert Morris Colonials are 2-6 on the season after playing in the Longwood Lancer Launch (2-2) and the Wings Etc. Classic (0-4). The Colonials will look to snap their four-game losing streak in the Liberty Softball Classic. Abrielle McCartney leads the Colonials with a .375 average. She has recorded four runs, two doubles, one homerun and six RBIs.
