HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 8/10 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is back home for its first home series of the 2019-20 season as the Bobcats host the Maine Black Bears in a two-game set Friday and Saturday night at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
Scouting Maine
Maine comes into the weekend with a 2-1-0 record on the season and are 0-1-0 in Hockey East play through the first three games. The Black Bears opened the season with a 7-0 loss at Providence before sweeping Alaska Anchorage last weekend with a 7-1 win and 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday. Senior Tim Doherty has two goals and three assists to open the season while junior Eduards Tralmaks has three goals and an assist to join in the offensive lead. Jeremy Swayman has started all three games, making 109 saves for a .924 save percentage a 2.95 GAA. He made 57 saves on 59 shots against the Seawolves after making 52 saves on 59 shots at Providence.
All-Time vs. Maine
Quinnipiac comes into the weekend with a 6-7-1 all-time record against Maine in 14 all-time meetings. The two teams are meeting for a fifth consecutive season, with the Bobcats going 4-3-1 in those eight games to hold the slight edge of late. Last season, the Bobcats swept a two-game series in Orono after cracking into the top 10 of the national rankings with a 7-2 win and 2-0 shutout.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats kicked off the 2019-20 season with a two-game sweep of the AIC Yellow Jackets last weekend with a pair of 3-2 wins. Keith Petruzzelli made 53 saves in the two victories while six different Bobcats each scored goals during the sweep. Odeen Tufto led all scorers with four points, tallying back-to-back two-assist games.
Paint Hamden Pink
Quinnipiac Athletics is partnering with the University and Town of Hamden for several Paint Hamden Pink nights, kicking off with Saturday's men's ice hockey game vs. Maine. The Bobcats encourage fans to wear pink clothing in addition to collecting donations that will benefit Paint Hamden Pink in partnership with the American Cancer Society.
Alumni Weekend
This weekend is Quinnipiac's annual Alumni Weekend, culminated with the pair of Quinnipiac men's ice hockey games against the Black Bears. This weekend the Bobcats will welcome Quinnipiac alumni from all class years but recognize the members there for their five-year, 10-year, and 25-year reunions.
National Rankings
The Bobcats are back in the top 10 of both national polls for the second time this season after climbing back to eighth in the USCHO.com Poll and a season-high 10th in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. Quinnipiac also received a season-high 598 points in the USCHO Poll and 180 points in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll.
Solid Start
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team opened the season with back-to-back wins for the second straight season and third time in the past five seasons after its sweep of AIC. Quinnipiac is looking to continue its winning ways as they have started with six straight wins two times in the past five years and look to continue the trend.
Twice as Fun
Odeen Tufto started the season with back-to-back two-assist games against the Yellow Jackets, tied for the most points in ECAC Hockey over the weekend. Through the start of the college hockey season, Tufto is one of 26 players with two two-point games, and one of 18 to do it in two games as he is tied for fifth in the nation with four assists. He now has 17 multi-assist games and 27 multi-point games in his 78 game career.
Dilly Dilly
Peter DiLiberatore picked up where he left off his freshman season in 2018-19 with points in back-to-back games against the Yellow Jackets. DiLiberatore opened the season with the game-winning power-play goal Friday night before adding an assist on the game-tying goal Saturday night. DiLiberatore was one of three defensemen in ECAC Hockey to score a goal so far this season.
Petro's Poised
Keith Petruzzelli shined in his 2019-20 debut for the Bobcats as he made 53 saves in two starts, including 28 saves Saturday night on the road at AIC. He was among the top goaltenders in the league as he leads the league with two wins this season and is third with a 2.00 GAA and .930 save percentage.
