A SUCCESSFUL DRIVE FOR FIVE
Quinnipiac picked up its fifth straight MAAC title and earned its fifth straight NCAA with a 4-1 win over Marist on April 29. Junior Jennifer Lu was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer for the second year in a row after picking up the clinching win at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2). Her win came moments after freshman No. 1 Dominique Vasile picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win for a 3-1 lead on the adjacent court.
LAST YEAR'S NCAA TOURNAMENT
A year ago, the Bobcats traveled to No. 6 seed Texas Tech in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and fell by a 4-0 score. Quinnipiac won a total of 18 games on the day, including three from current sophomore Layla Rodriguez in the first set of her match at No. 5 singles, which was the closest set for the Bobcats. The 18 games won by the Bobcats set a new high-water mark for the program in their NCAA appearances.
MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP (QUINNIPIAC 4, MARIST 1)
Quinnipiac finished the 2018 MAAC Championship with two singles wins 15 seconds apart as the Bobcats took a 4-1 win over Marist on April 29 at the Mercer Country Tennis Center to earn their fifth straight MAAC title. Freshman Dominique Vasile and junior Jennifer Lu played side-by-side at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and stayed on almost exactly the same schedule. They had simultaneous set points to win the first set, and then both had match points moments apart in the second set to provide the final two points for the clinch. Vasile earned her 6-3, 6-2 win first when a Marist shot sailed wide, and just after the handshake at the net, Lu saw a ball out over the baseline that clinched her 6-4, 6-2 win and the Bobcats' championship. After Quinnipiac won the doubles point quickly, Marist came out playing well at singles and forced the Bobcats to dig down for their fifth straight title. Bobcat freshman Courtney Nash was the one exception to the closely-contested singles courts, taking control of her match early at No. 6 and earning a 6-1, 6-3 win to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. After Marist took a win at No. 5, the Bobcats were able to take their final two points in quick succession, while Layla Rodriguez was in position to win at No. 4 as well, up 7-6, 4-2 when her match was called
BOBCATS SWEEP MAAC AWARDS
Quinnipiac earned a clean sweep of everything they were eligible for in the 2017-18 MAAC Postseason Awards. Freshman Dominique Vasile was named both the Rookie of the Year and the Player of the Year after going through the MAAC schedule undefeated at 12-0 (6-0 in singles, 6-0 in doubles) while taking over the role at No. 1 singles in the second half of the year. Paula Miller was named the MAAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Bobcats to another undefeated regular season in conference play despite losing a big senior class of four players from a year ago (including the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles players from last season). Vasile was first-team All-MAAC at No. 1 singles, while Jennifer Lu (No. 2), Payton Bradley (No. 3), Layla Rodriguez (No. 4), Proyfon Lohaphaisan (No. 5) and Courtney Nash (No. 6) were all first-team All-MAAC selections as well. Vasile and Lohaphaisan added a first-team honor at No. 2 doubles, but the Bobcats did not have anyone eligible for No. 1 or No. 3.
ANOTHER UNDEFEATED REGULAR SEASON
Quinnipiac finished off a perfect run (7-0) through the MAAC regular season with a shutout win over Fairfield. The Bobcats concluded their fifth straight undefeated regular season since joining the league in 2013-14, and are now 47-0 all-time in MAAC matches (which includes a 37-0 mark in the regular season, and 10-0 in the tournament).
MAAC DOMINATION
This year saw the Bobcats win all of their regular season MAAC matches by at least a 6-1 score, while only dropping one of a possible 42 singles matches on the year. Quinnipiac did drop just its second singles match to a conference opponent in the finals, but improved its record to 47-2 overall in their nine matches against MAAC teams.
VASILE HONORED AGAIN
Freshman Dominique Vasile was named the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, April 26, the final week of the regular season, for the fourth time. She capped off an undefeated run through the regular season in the MAAC with a hard-fought three-set win at Fairfield and then took another three-setter against Middlebury, ranked No. 4 in Division III. It was the second week in a row that she had won, after earning the honor on April 18 after a 4-0 week in wins over Siena and Marist, as Quinnipiac handed both teams their first MAAC losses.
ON A ROLL
Dominique Vasile comes into the NCAA Tournament with a 12-1 record in her last 13 singles matches, with the only loss in that stretch coming at Harvard. She has won seven in a row, all playing at No. 1, and has dropped only three sets combined in her last 12 wins, 11 of which have come while playing No. 1 (she also won a match playing at No. 2 singles against Navy).
MILESTONES REACHED
Juniors Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Jennifer Lu both entered the Siena match on April 13 with 99 wins and both were able to come out as members of the 100-win club. Lohaphaisan earned hers with a win at No. 2 doubles, while Lu followed with a win at No. 2 singles for her 100th. They are the 23rd and 24th players in school history to reach the 100-win milestone, and they will have a chance to move as high as the top five in school history as seniors next season. The all-time program record of 169 victories was set by Jacqueline Raynor '15.
LOOKING FRESH
Quinnipiac was picked first in the MAAC Preseason poll this year, despite losing its No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles players from last year's senior class, as well as all four players at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. A big reason why Quinnipiac was picked to win the MAAC again this year, despite losing a large senior class off of last year's team, is that the freshman class this year came in with high expectations. The Class of 2021 has not disappointed, as the team's freshmen have combined for 61 singles wins on the season, led by 17 apiece from Dominique Vasile (No. 1 singles) and Courtney Nash (No. 6).
SHOWING THEIR DEPTH
Quinnipiac has had the luxury of a relatively stable lineup this season, but it has also been fortunate to have several players at the ready to step in when called upon. In a match against Marist on April 15, junior Alexandra Mircea teamed with Layla Rodriguez at No. 3 doubles. It was Mircea's first action since October, and the two players dominated their match in a 6-1 win. The duo stayed together at No. 3 doubles in the final week of the regular season and improved to 3-0 with wins against Fairfield (6-3) and Middlebury (6-1), then stretched their win streak to five straight with two more wins in dominant fashion in the MAAC Tournament over Niagara (6-1) and Marist (6-0).
QUINNIPIAC NCAA HISTORY
Quinnipiac is making its 11th NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in its 20 seasons at the Division I level. After moving up to Division I in 1998-99, the Bobcats had their breakthrough year in 2004, winning the Northeast Conference Tournament for the first of five straight years from 2004-08. Quinnipiac added another NEC title in 2011, and has won all five MAAC Championships from 2014-18 since joining the league.
