
QU Women's Tennis Falls to No. 10 South Carolina in NCAA Tournament Opening Round

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hadley Berg and Paige Cline won at No. 1 doubles and then picked up singles wins at No. 2 and No. 4 to lead the No. 10 seed South Carolina women's tennis team to a 4-0 win over Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The loss concludes the Bobcats' season with a 15-8 record, after they tied the school record for wins in a season at the Division I level. South Carolina improves to 20-6 with the win and moves on to tomorrow's second-round match against Virginia.
Freshman Dominique Vasile and junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan put up the best fight in doubles at No. 2, staying within 3-2 in the early going and trailing 4-2 when the match was called after South Carolina clinched the doubles point. Berg and Cline had the point clinched at No. 1 with a 6-1 win after the Gamecocks earned a 6-0 win at No. 3.
Lohaphaisan got off to the best start for the Bobcats in singles, as she trailed 3-2 in the first set at No. 5, and had a deuce point to try to tie it 3-3, before eventually falling 6-2 in the first set. Her match was unfinished after South Carolina clinched the team win with its fourth point.
Vasile fell in the first set 6-0 at No. 1 singles, but bounced back to win two of the first three games in the second set. She also did not complete her match, and will keep a seven-match win streak in singles intact heading into next season. Freshman Courtney Nash bounced back from a 6-0 defeat in the first set at No. 6 singles to take two games in the second set before falling 6-0, 6-2.
Quinnipiac ended its 2018 season after winning its fifth straight MAAC title and earning its fifth NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in a row (11th all-time). The Bobcats will return their entire roster next year as they try to make it six league titles in a row and earn a return visit to the NCAA Tournament.
