WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Quinnipiac women's tennis team finished the 2018 MAAC Championship with two singles wins 15 seconds apart as the Bobcats took a 4-1 win over Marist on Sunday afternoon at the Mercer Country Tennis Center to earn their fifth straight MAAC title.

The Bobcats have won all five MAAC titles since they joined the league in 2013-14 and have still never lost to a league opponent in that span, going a combined 47-0 in the regular season (37-0) and conference tournament (10-0). Quinnipiac will now wait for NCAA selections to find out where they are going for this year's NCAA Tournament.
Freshman Dominique Vasile and junior Jennifer Lu played side-by-side at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and stayed on almost exactly the same schedule. They had simultaneous set points to win the first set, and then both had match points moments apart in the second set to provide the final two points for the clinch. Vasile earned her 6-3, 6-2 win first when a Marist shot sailed wide, and just after the handshake at the net, Lu saw a ball out over the baseline that clinched her 6-4, 6-2 win and the Bobcats' championship.
After Quinnipiac won the doubles point quickly, Marist came out playing well at singles and forced the Bobcats to dig down for their fifth straight title. Vasile battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to win five straight games before taking a 6-3 win in the first set. For the Red Foxes, Claire Schmitz took a 6-0 win in the first set at No. 3, Sam Galu won 6-1 in the first set at No. 5, and Sophia Moeller went ahead 5-2 at No. 4.
However, Bobcats freshman Courtney Nash took control of her match early at No. 6 singles and earned a 6-1, 6-3 win to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats slowly battled back on the other three courts, as Layla Rodriguez came back to win a first set tiebreaker at No. 4 (8-6) and freshman Payton Bradley came back after being down 0-6, 1-5 to win six straight games and earn a split at No. 3. Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan also battled back from a 1-5 deficit in the second set to close to within 5-4, before Galu was able to earn the 6-1, 6-4 win for Marist's lone point to close within 2-1.
The Bobcats were able to take control of courts 1 and 2, though, as Lu and Vasile both went to the last changeover with 5-2 leads. Both got ahead quickly in their decisive games, and then both finished off their matches moments apart to give the Bobcats their fifth title in a row. Rodriguez was ahead of Moeller 7-6, 3-1 at No. 4 when their match was called after the Bobcats clinched, while Bradley and Schmitz hadn't completed the first game of their third set at No. 3.
Quinnipiac also managed to win the doubles point with near-simultaneous victories. Rodriguez and junior Alexandra Mircea closed out a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles, and before they even got to the net for the handshake, Bradley and Lu finished off a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Vasile and Lohaphaisan were ahead 4-2 at No. 2 when their match was called.
Lu earned the Most Outstanding Performer Award for the second year in a row after going 4-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend, and improving to 8-0 in singles and doubles in the MAAC Tournament over the last two years.
Quinnipiac will find out its first-round opponent when NCAA selections are announced on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Last year, the Bobcats traveled to Lubbock, Texas to play Texas Tech in the opening round. The Bobcats have also traveled to Stanford, North Carolina and Miami (Fla.) during their current championship run.
