Casey Herzog Tosses Two-Hit Shutout in QU Softball's 4-0 Win Over Sacred Heart

HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team got on the board early and never looked back as the Bobcats shut out the Sacred Heart Pioneers 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the QU Softball field. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 20-27 on the season, while Sacred Heart falls to 29-22 overall.
The Bobcats were led by Casey Herzog, who recorded her third complete-game shutout of the season. Herzog went the distance and gave up only two hits, while striking out seven batters.
Quinnipiac got on the board with three runs in the first inning. Erin Larsen led the inning off with a walk before Lexi Courtney singled and Keala Cordeiro drew a walk to load the bases for Keilani Finley. Finley was hit by a pitch, which forced a run home to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Brighid Douglas followed with a bases-loaded walk to force home another run and give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Miranda Magana then reached base on a fielder's choice, allowing another run to score to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 advantage after the first inning.
Quinnipiac added an insurance run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Magana lined a double to the right-centerfield fence to put a runner in scoring position. Emily Czaja then stepped to the plate and singled to the outfield, scoring Magana to give Quinnipiac a four-run advantage.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday, May 5, when the Bobcats travel to take on MAAC foe Manhattan in a doubleheader starting at noon.
