HAMDEN, Conn. — On the heels of another MAAC series win this past weekend, the Quinnipiac Bobcats baseball team will host a nonconference game on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against the Hartford Hawks.
The Hartford-Quinnipiac game at the QU Baseball Field was the first of nine straight home contests on the schedule, but that number is down to eight for now. The nonconference home game against the UMass Minutemen that was slated for Wednesday has been called off due to the weather forecast. There is no word yet on whether the game will be rescheduled.
Tuesday's game features two teams that are in first place in their respective conferences. Quinnipiac leads the MAAC with a 10-2 conference record, while Hartford paces the America East at 8-4. In the MAAC, Manhattan is in second place while Canisius is third.
Hartford has defeated Quinnipiac twice this season, 12-11 on April 5 and 8-2 on April 10. Both games were at Fiondella Field, the Hawks' home in West Hartford.
LAST TIME OUT: MAAC SERIES WIN
SUNDAY — CANISIUS 8, QUINNIPIAC 5
SATURDAY, GAME 1 — QUINNIPIAC 9, CANISIUS 5
SATURDAY, GAME 2 — QUINNIPIAC 3, CANISIUS 0
The Bobcats emerged from the weekend with their fourth straight MAAC series win this season, taking two of three games from Canisius at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
After falling behind 7-0 on Sunday, the Bobcats rallied to make it a game but couldn't quite complete the comeback and lost to Canisius 8-5. Despite the loss, the Bobcats maintained their first-place standing in the MAAC.
On Saturday, Quinnipiac swept a doubleheader with Canisius. In QU's 9-5 win in game one, junior Liam Scafariello paced a 10-hit attack with two solo home runs. His eight homers are second on the team and in the conference, behind Bobcats senior Ben Gibson (nine HRs).
In QU's game-two win, right-handed starter Brandon Shileikis recorded a masterful 3-0 shutout in the seven-inning game (one doubleheader contest is typically seven innings). A 6-foot-1 graduate student, Shileikis struck out seven while allowing only four hits and two walks.
Quinnipiac made it dramatic in game two, waiting until the top of the seventh to score all three runs. Scafariello led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on freshman Colton Bender's RBI single to right field. After junior Kevin Huscher walked with two outs, he and Bender advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, and then freshman Ian Ostberg provided some insurance runs with a two-RBI single.
As it turned out, Shileikis didn't need the insurance. He closed out the shutout with two strikeouts (both swinging).

BOBCATS REMAIN NO. 4 IN NEIBA POLL
Quinnipiac was ranked fourth again in this week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Coaches Poll, which was announced Monday. QU was No. 4 the previous two weeks.
This week's rankings:
1 – UConn
2 – Northeastern
3 – Bryant
4 – Quinnipiac
5 – Yale
This week's NEIBA poll was the fifth of the season. Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the season's first poll, announced on Monday, March 26. It was the first time the Bobcats had cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade. In the second NEIBA poll on April 2, the Bobcats dropped from the top five but received votes.
The poll is conducted by New England college baseball coaches in Division I; the top five teams are ranked. There are also NEIBA polls for Divisions II and III.
HOME SWEET HOME
After playing 26 straight road games over two months to start the season, Quinnipiac finally hosted a visitor at the QU Baseball Field in the weekend series against Monmouth on April 7-8. The Bobcats' three-game series sweep was the first time they swept the Hawks. The long road exodus had sent the Bobcats to such destinations as Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Long Island and New Jersey.
In the doubleheader with Monmouth on April 8, Quinnipiac was propelled to victory by the clutch hitting of junior Liam Scafariello and senior Ben Gibson, who tag-teamed for some walk-off magic. Each player had the game-winning hit in Quinnipiac's last at-bat, and the final score of each game was 4-3.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac was picked to finish eighth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish first, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield and Niagara rounding out the top four.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney is in his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed 86 wins in his three-plus years as head coach, including 29 wins in 2015, which tied the program record for most victories in a single season. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing third in the conference — their highest regular season conference finish since winning the regular season Northeast Conference title in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
NEXT UP
After the Bobcats' two midweek nonconference games, they will host Iona for a three-game weekend MAAC series on Saturday (doubleheader, 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
