LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- The Quinnipiac softball team used a five-run fourth inning to take a 7-1 win over Siena in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, but fell in the nightcap 5-0 as it left 10 runners stranded over seven innings.
With the split, the Bobcats move to 19-23 overall and 7-5 in the MAAC, remaining in solid shape to qualify for the conference tournament as one of the top six finishers. Siena moves to 10-18 overall and 5-3 in the MAAC with the split.
The Saints struck first in the opener for a run in the bottom of the second inning off of senior starter Casey Herzog, but that was the only run she would allow. She helped her own cause by setting the table for the five-run fourth inning with a leadoff single, and came home on an RBI double from senior first baseman Keala Cordeiro to tie the score. Cordeiro then came home on a bunt single from senior designated player Lexi Courtney to give the Bobcats the lead for good.
An infield single from sophomore second baseman Rachel Marchuk loaded the bases, and sophomore left fielder Megan Dyson added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly for the second out. Junior catcher Taylor Troyan and junior right fielder Erin Larsen had two-out RBI singles to make the score 5-1 before Siena could finally escape the inning.
The Bobcats added two more in the top of the seventh, as senior center fielder Keilani Finley had an RBI double to left center and Marchuk tacked on an RBI single. Herzog allowed two infield singles in the bottom of the seventh, but left the runners stranded as she picked up the complete-game victory, her MAAC-leading 15th win of the season. Herzog finished the game allowing seven hits, striking out six and walking one. Troyan was 2-for-3 and Cordeiro and Marchuk were each 2-for-4 for the Bobcats.
The nightcap saw Quinnipiac have plenty of chances, totaling nine hits (including 3-for-3 from freshman second baseman Brighid Douglas) and leaving 10 runners on, but the Bobcats fell 5-0 as Siena was able to salvage the split. They had their best chance in the top of the second when Douglas led off with a double, and a single and stolen base from senior shortstop Miranda Magana put runners on second and third with nobody out.
After Siena scored a run in the bottom of the second, Larsen led off with a double in the third but was left on second before Siena opened the game with three runs in the bottom half.
Courtney was 2-for-4 for the Bobcats in the nightcap, while Douglas' 3-for-3 included hits to lead off the second, fourth and sixth innings. Cordeiro added a hit to stretch her hitting streak to eight games, a season-long for any Bobcat.
Quinnipiac will be back in action at home tomorrow when it takes on league-leading Monmouth for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
