HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team has a big weekend ahead with doubleheaders against teams ahead of it in the MAAC standings, traveling to third-place Siena on Saturday and hosting league-leading Monmouth on Sunday at 12 p.m.
LAST GAMES (QUINNIPIAC 9, HOLY CROSS 1; HOLY CROSS 11, QU 8)
The Quinnipiac softball team cruised to a quick 9-1 win in five innings over Holy Cross in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Quinnipiac Softball Field, and nearly pulled off a comeback win to complete a sweep before falling in the nightcap 11-8 in eight innings to split the day. Quinnipiac was down 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap before tying the score on three doubles, but left the winning run on third before Holy Cross scored three times in the top of the eight to salvage the split. Keala Cordeiro was 3-for-3 with three RBI in the opener and 5-for-8 on the day, while Casey Herzog threw a six-hitter with one run allowed in the opener to get the win. Lexi Courtney homered and had three RBI in the nightcap, including an RBI double in the seventh before coming home on a tying double from Megan Dyson.
QUEEN OF THE PITCHING CIRCLE
Casey Herzog leads the MAAC in pitching wins (14) and ERA (1.51). She has a healthy lead in earned run average, as no other pitcher in the league has an ERA lower than 2.00, while second place in wins this year is 11. She is coming off a six-hitter on Wednesday against Holy Cross, after a three-hit shutout in her last MAAC outing against Marist on Saturday.
BIG BATS
Junior Erin Larsen and senior Keilani Finley rank among the top power hitters in the MAAC so far this season. Larsen is tied for second in the MAAC with seven home runs, while Finley is one behind with six in a tie for fourth. On the RBI charts, Larsen is third with 25 and Finley is right behind in fifth with 22, while Finley is tied for the league lead with four triples.
MULTIPLE BOBCATS EARN MAAC HONORS
Senior Keilani Finley (10 RBI in four MAAC games) was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on April 10 after driving in 10 runs in a four-game weekend against Niagara and Canisius. She became the latest in a long line of MAAC honorees this year. Sophomore infielder Rachel Marchuk was named the Player of the Week for games through Sunday, March 25 after batting .500 (6-for-12) in five games for the Bobcats, including a home run and two doubles. A week prior, senior pitcher Casey Herzog was named the Pitcher of the Week for games through March 18 after going 4-0 for the Bobcats with three complete games, a 0.54 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 26 innings of work. On March 11, junior Erin Larsen was named the Player of the Week after a strong performance at the USF Under Armour Showcase, batting .500 (8-16) with seven RBI over the tournament.
NEVER SAY DIE
Quinnipiac had a memorable 11-9 comeback win over Maine at the USF Under Armour Showcase on March 10. The Bobcats found themselves down 8-0 after two innings, but tied it 9-9 in the sixth on back-to-back homers from Keilani Finley and Erin Larsen, before winning it with two runs in the seventh.
FIRST 2018 WIN A DRAMATIC ONE
Quinnipiac traveled to Orlando, Florida to open its season at the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament, hosted by the University of Central Florida. The Bobcats earned their first win of the year in dramatic fashion, taking a 5-4 victory over Kennesaw State in extra innings on a two-run walk-off homer from Miranda Magana in the bottom of the ninth.
LAST YEAR VS. SIENA
Quinnipiac split a home doubleheader with Siena a year ago, falling in the opener 10-6 and winning the nightcap 2-1. In the win, Lexi Courtney hit a solo homer to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead, and Emily Czaja had a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh as Abbey Long went the distance with a six-hitter to get the win. In the opener, Erin Larsen was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Rebecca Drake was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
LAST YEAR VS. MONMOUTH
Quinnipiac dropped a pair of narrow 2-1 decisions at Monmouth last season. Both games followed a similar pattern: scoreless through five, a big hit from graduated Monmouth shortstop Rachel Shotzbarger in the bottom of the sixth, and a comeback that fell short in the seventh for the Bobcats. In the opener, Shotzbarger had a two-run double in the sixth and Rachel Marchuk cut it to 2-1 with an RBI double in the seventh before Quinnipiac left runners on second and third. In the nightcap, Shotzbarger had a two-run homer in the sixth, before Lexi Courtney hit a solo shot in the seventh, but the Bobcats left the tying run on first base.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats don't have a midweek game this week, and will return to action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Fairfield.
