WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Senior Ryan Corcoran scored the game-winning goal 45 seconds into the second overtime to give the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team a 10-9 road win over Monmouth and clinch the top seed in the MAAC Tournament on May 3-5, which will also be at Monmouth.
Neither team ever led by more than one goal in the entire contest, as the Bobcats improve to 8-5 on the year and 5-0 in the MAAC with one league game left next weekend. The Bobcats could still tie for the regular season title with Detroit Mercy, but they would have the tiebreaker due to a head-to-head win over the Titans on March 31. Monmouth falls to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC with the loss.
A year ago, Monmouth defeated the Bobcats in double-overtime in the conference opener for both teams, and Quinnipiac went on to miss out on the conference tournament (while Monmouth captured its first league title). Two years ago, the Bobcats won at Monmouth to clinch the top seed (which also gave Quinnipiac the right to host the MAAC Championships as the top seed), and then went on to finish a perfect regular season in the MAAC and win the conference tournament on its home field for its first NCAA berth.
This time around, Monmouth forced the game into overtime on a goal from Dylan Schulte with 30 seconds left in regulation. Quinnipiac won the ensuing face-off and had a chance to win in regulation, but junior attack Mike Fletcher's shot was saved by Monmouth goalkeeper Noah Lode.
Neither team scored in the first four-minute overtime session as sophomore goalie Joe Zukauskas came up with two big saves for the Bobcats to keep the game tied. Senior face-off specialist Will Vitelli then won the face-off cleanly in the second overtime, picking up the ground ball to secure possession, and Corcoran scored an unassisted goal 45 seconds later to set off the celebration as the Bobcats guaranteed themselves at least a share of the regular season title.
Junior attack Foster Cuomo nearly provided the winner in regulation, as his goal with 6:02 remaining almost held up the rest of the way, before Schulte tied it up for the Hawks. Monmouth scored first in the fourth quarter to take an 8-7 lead, but Fletcher answered to tie the score 8-8 with 9:12 remaining.
Quinnipiac held a 44-29 lead in shots for the day, but Lode was big with 15 saves to keep the Hawks in it. Vitelli was equally big for the Bobcats, winning 18-of-22 face-offs, including the three biggest ones of the game with 30 seconds left in regulation and to start both overtime periods.
Senior midfielder Brian Feldman had two goals to move alone into third place on Quinnipiac's all-time goal list with 118, passing Alan LoGiudice '01, who graduated with 117. Corcoran and Cuomo each had two goals and an assist to lead the Bobcats with three points apiece. Senior David Glynn and junior Grant Skophammer added their first goals of the season in the first half.
The Bobcats will next be in action when they travel to Marist next Saturday to close out the regular season.
