HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's golf team, which has won the last two league titles, will try to make it three in a row when it heads to Orlando, Florida for the three-day MAAC Championships at Disney's Magnolia Course from Friday to Sunday.
The Bobcats pulled out last season's title in a close battle by just six strokes over Albany, and won the 2016 title by 12 strokes over Monmouth. Current sophomore Alexandra Sazhin won the McLeod Trophy given to the first-place finisher as the 2017 MAAC Player of the Year while she also won the Rookie of the Year award after posting the top score for a freshman.
In addition to Sazhin, Luciana Tobia-Palza, Julia Kemmling and Estefania Morales all finished in the top 10, with Tobia-Palza and Kemmling doing so for the second straight year. Tobia-Palza finished tied for fifth while Kemmling tied for seventh and Morales finished ninth.
Quinnipiac finished the tournament with a 312 on the final round to total 939 ( 75) for the three-round tournament. Quinnipiac led Albany ( 81) by six strokes, followed by Monmouth ( 97), Dayton ( 111) and Siena ( 142) to round out the top five. The Bobcats' 939 marked their second-best 54-hole score in postseason history.
This year's Bobcat squad has been consistent all season long. Quinnipiac won three tournaments in the fall, making them one of only four NCAA Division I teams in the country to win three tournaments. The Bobcats took first place at the Dartmouth Invitational, the Hartford Invitational and the St. John's Invitational. Quinnipiac completed the first semester with its highest rating in program history at 124, just ahead of Albany (145), the Bobcats' biggest threat to a possible three-peat.
In the spring, the Bobcats have traveled to play in some challenging tournaments, and have finished in the top four in each of the last four they have played in — the Benbow Invitational (third), the Low Country Invitational (third), the Babs Steffens Hatter Collegiate (fourth) and the Navy Spring Invitational (third). The Bobcats won their flight championship at the Kiawah Island Classic.
Individually, Sazhin and freshman Queenie Lai combined for four MAAC Players of the Week in the spring (three from Lai) and are tied for the top stroke average in a single season at 77.32 heading into the MAAC Tournament (Nicole Scola holds the record at 77.79). Tobia-Palza comes in with an average of 78.27, which would place fourth.
Sazhin broke the school record for most birdies in a season and currently stands at 50, passing the old mark (44) set by Tobia-Palza in 2016. Lai comes into the weekend with 37 birdies this year, while Tobia-Palza has 36. As a team, the scoring average of the 2017-18 squad of 310.00 is 10 shots better than the previous school record of 320.88, set last year.
The three rounds of the MAAC Championship begin on Friday and conclude on Sunday, and Sunday's round will be shown on ESPN3. The winner will move on to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in May.
