HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's tennis team travels to Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon for its final regular season MAAC match, hoping to finish undefeated in MAAC play for the fifth straight year since joining the league in 2013-14.
QUINNIPIAC BOBCATS (12-6, 6-0 MAAC) vs.
FAIRFIELD STAGS (6-7, 3-1 MAAC)
Date/Time: Tuesday, April 17, 3 p.m.
Place: WAC Tennis Courts | Fairfield, Conn.
TOP SEED ON THE LINE
After handing Siena and Marist their first conference losses of the year on Friday and Sunday, the Bobcats can wrap up the top seed in the MAAC Tournament with a win over Fairfield. The Stags are 3-1 in the MAAC and could beat out the Bobcats for the top seed with a win, since they would have the ensuing tiebreaker should both teams end up 6-1. The Bobcats have gone undefeated in MAAC play in each of their first four seasons since joining the league in 2013-14.
LAST MATCH (QUINNIPIAC 7, MARIST 0)
Sunday night's match at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club shaped up as a battle between two teams undefeated in the MAAC, but the Bobcats left little doubt, quickly earning the doubles point and then quickly wrapping up three singles matches for the clinch. In doubles, junior Alexandra Mircea and sophomore Layla Rodriguez took a 6-1 win at No. 3, which was quickly followed by another 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles from freshman Dominique Vasile and junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan. Junior Jennifer Lu and freshman Payton Bradley finished off the sweep with a 7-6 win at No. 1 (7-4 in the tiebreaker). Freshman Courtney Nash then rolled to a straight-set win at No. 6 singles, which was followed quickly by wins from Lu at No. 2 and Lohaphaisan at No. 5. Bradley finished off the shutout with a hard-fought three-set win at No. 3, winning the tiebreaker 10-8 on an ace.
MILESTONES REACHED
Juniors Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Jennifer Lu both entered the Siena match on Friday with 99 wins and both were able to come out as members of the 100-win club. Lohaphaisan earned hers with a win at No. 2 doubles, while Lu followed with a win at No. 2 singles for her 100th. After sweeping Marist on Sunday night, Lohaphaisan now stands at 103 wins, while Lu is right behind with 102.
BOBCATS STRETCH MAAC WIN STREAK TO 44
Since joining the league in 2013-14, Quinnipiac has never lost to a MAAC opponent, entering the Fairfield match with 44 straight wins (36-0 regular season, 8-0 in the MAAC Tournament). The Bobcats have been pushed in the last two years in the conference finals, coming back to defeat Marist 4-3 for the 2016 title and then taking a hard-fought 4-2 win over Siena a year ago.
LOOKING FRESH
A big reason why Quinnipiac was picked to win the MAAC again this year, despite losing a large senior class off of last year's team, is that the freshman class this year came in with high expectations. The Class of 2021 has not disappointed, as the team's freshmen have combined for 51 singles wins, led by 14 from Dominique Vasile, who has settled into the role at No. 1 singles, and 13 from Courtney Nash.
PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME
Since becoming Quinnipiac's regular at No. 1 singles, freshman Dominique Vasile has stepped up to the challenge in a big way. She is 9-1 in her last 10 matches, with the only loss coming at Harvard.
SHOWING THEIR DEPTH
Quinnipiac has had the luxury of a relatively stable lineup this season, but it has also been fortunate to have several players at the ready to step in when called upon. In Sunday's match against Marist, junior Alexandra Mircea teamed with Layla Rodriguez at No. 3 doubles. It was Mircea's first action since October, and the two players dominated in a 6-1 win.
LAST YEAR vs. FAIRFIELD
Quinnipiac took a 7-0 home win over the Stags a year ago. Jennifer Lu had a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, Layla Rodriguez had a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, and the two players combined for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Proyfon Lohaphaisan added a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
NEXT UP
Quinnipiac closes out the regular season with a home match against Middlebury on Friday before heading to the MAAC Tournament next week in search of its fifth straight title.
