FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's tennis team completed an undefeated run through the MAAC regular season for the fifth year in a row by defeating Fairfield 7-0 on the road on Tuesday afternoon, stretching its MAAC win streak to 45 straight matches (37-0 regular season, 8-0 in the MAAC Tournament).
The win was the fifth in a row for the Bobcats and eighth in their last nine matches as they improve to 13-6 overall, including 7-0 in the MAAC. With the win, Quinnipiac clinched the top seed in next week's conference tournament, where the Bobcats will open up on Saturday, April 28 against the No. 4 seed and try to add their fifth straight conference championship to their run of five straight undefeated regular seasons.
Fairfield, which suffered only its second conference loss (3-2), did push Quinnipiac on several courts, taking two of the singles matches to three sets and falling just 6-4 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Layla Rodriguez and junior Alexandra Mircea were the first to win in doubles, taking a 6-3 win at No. 3, and junior Jennifer Lu and freshman Payton Bradley secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 1. Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan and freshman Dominique Vasile finished off the sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
For the second straight match, freshman Courtney Nash was the first to get a win in the books at No. 6 singles, as she took a 6-2, 6-2 win to push the Bobcat lead to 2-0. Lohaphaisan then followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 to get Quinnipiac within one win of the clinch, and Bradley was able to provide the fourth and decisive point with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3.
Lu took her match at No. 2 in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 before the final two matches were pushed to three sets. Vasile took the first set 6-4 at No. 1 singles, but dropped the second 6-4 before winning the extended tiebreaker in the third 10-6 to stretch her win streak to five and her record to 10-1 in her last 11 matches at No. 1 singles (with the only loss at Harvard).
Rodriguez was the final match to finish at No. 4 singles after she suffered a narrow loss in the second set (7-5 in the tiebreaker) to split after winning the first set 6-3. She regrouped to take the decisive third-set tiebreaker 10-5 to finish off the 7-0 win.
The Bobcats have one final regular season match on Friday, when they take on Division III power Middlebury at 3 p.m. at Quinnipiac Tennis Courts, before traveling to New Jersey's Mercer County Tennis Center next weekend for the conference championships.
