QU Women's Tennis Travels to Providence, Siena For Late-Week Road Matches

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team plays road matches on back-to-back days when it travels to Providence for a non-conference match on Thursday at 2 p.m. and then takes on Siena on Friday in a rematch of last year's MAAC title match, which the Bobcats won 4-2.

CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH
Quinnipiac's Friday match with Siena will be a rematch of the MAAC Championship a year ago, when the Bobcats came away with a tight 4-2 win to earn their fourth straight title. Current junior Jennifer Lu won at both singles and doubles on her way to Most Outstanding Performer honors, teaming with current sophomore Layla Rodriguez for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles and then picking up a win at No. 2 singles. Rodriguez was ahead in the third set in her singles match as well when graduated senior Sydney Young picked up the clincher to send the Bobcats on to the NCAA Tournament.
BOBCATS STRETCH MAAC STREAK TO 42
In Quinnipiac's last match on Wednesday, April 4, the Bobcats were able to capture a 6-1 win over Monmouth to improve to 4-0 in the MAAC this season and 42-0 all-time against MAAC opponents (34-0 regular season, 8-0 in tournaments). Freshman Stephanie Yanosov had a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, while junior Jennifer Lu earned the clincher with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Freshman Dominique Vasile (6-1, 6-2 at No. 1) and sophomore Layla Rodriguez (6-1, 6-0 at No. 4) also had dominant singles wins.
CLOSING IN
Juniors Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Jennifer Lu have a chance to join the century club this week, as Lohaphaisan comes into the Providence match with 98 career wins (including both singles and doubles), while Lu is right behind with 97.
VASILE EARNS SECOND MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR...
Freshman Dominique Vasile was named the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season on Wednesday April 4, after a singles-doubles sweep in a MAAC win over Niagara. She also earned the honor on Wednesday, Feb. 21, after her strong performance against the Binghamton Bearcats. Vasile earned wins in No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, picking up a convincing straight-set win in singles (6-4, 6-2).
... AND LOHAPHAISAN EARNS ONE TOO
Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan earned the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on March 21, following her strong performance on the Bobcats' Spring Break trip to the IMG Academy in Florida. After a pair of tough defeats against Navy on the first day of Quinnipiac's trip, Lohaphaisan came back to win four matches in one day as the Bobcats took 5-2 wins over Colgate and Bryant. Her Bryant sweep included an 8-6 win in the doubles tiebreaker, and an 11-9 win in a third-set singles tiebreaker.
BOBCATS CLOSE FLORIDA TRIP WITH TWO DRAMATIC WINS
Quinnipiac took a pair of dramatic 5-2 wins over Colgate and Bryant on its final day of its Spring Break trip to the IMG Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida on Thursday. In its first match against Colgate, Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan and freshman Courtney Nash both battled back after dropping their first sets to win three-setters and give the Bobcats the 5-2 win. Against Bryant, the Bobcats won tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to squeak out the doubles point by the narrowest of margins, and then pulled out the 5-2 win in a match where all five courts that were played to completion went to three Proyfon Lohaphaisannd freshman Stephanie Yanosov each finished the day with 4-0 records.
BOBCAT WIN LEADERS
Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan currently leads all Bobcats with 15 singles wins so far this season, one ahead of classmate Jennifer Lu with 13. Lu. meanwhile, leads the Bobcats in doubles wins (11) and overall wins (25).
LU COMPETES IN ITA MASTERS
In September, junior Jennifer Lu earned an invitation to compete in the 2017 Oracle/ ITA Masters at the Malibu Racquet Club in Malibu, California. Her tip earned her the chance to compete against the top -ranked player in the country, Ena Shibahara of UCLA, who took the match by aJennifer Luinal.
A DOUBLY GOOD WIN
Junior Jennifer Lu and sophomore Layla Rodriguez participated in the Hofstra Invitational in doubles in the fall, reaching the finals. The duo combined for three wins over the weekend, including two wins in the Doubles A bracket to advance to the finals. One of their victories came over Fordham's Carina Ma and Estelle Wong, 7-6 (8-3). Ma and Wong were undefeated to start the 2017-18 season until being defeated by Lu and Rodriguez.

Three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, Paula Miller, announced Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Amy Zammarieh as the captains of the Quinnipiac women's tennis team for 2018.
PICKED TO WIN AGAIN
Quinnipiac lost a deep senior class from last year's MAAC Championship team, including its No. 1 (Sitilia Rencheli), No. 3 (Rachel Horton) and No. 4 (Sydney Young) singles players. However, the league's coaches still showed their respect for what the Bobcats have accomplished, as Quinnipiac was still the unanimous favorites to win the 2017-18 MAAC Championship in the league's preseason poll.
LOOKING FRESH
A big reason why the Bobcats were still picked to win the MAAC is that they brought in an impressive freshman class to help fill the void left behind by last year's graduating class. So far, the rookies have not disappointed, as the team's freshmen have combined for 43 singles wins, led by 11 from Dominique Vasile, who has frequently played at No. 1 singles, and 10 from Courtney Nash.
