HAMDEN, Conn. — Seeking to keep hold of first place in the MAAC, the Quinnipiac baseball team will host a three-game home series against the Siena Saints on Friday and Saturday, after the schedule was adjusted due to impending bad weather on Sunday. The teams will now play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m., and a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. (a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning game).
Undefeated in the conference, Quinnipiac (6-0 MAAC) is alone in first, while Siena (5-4) is tied for fifth. Manhattan (5-1) is in second place.
LAST TIME OUT
Quinnipiac lost back-to-back nonconference road games this week. The Bobcats started strong Wednesday against the Boston College Eagles but couldn't prevent BC from rallying for a 9-5 nonconference win. On Tuesday, QU lost to the Hartford Hawks 8-2.
BOBCATS MOVE UP TO NO. 4 IN NEIBA POLL
The Quinnipiac baseball team is moving up: The Bobcats are ranked fourth in this week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Coaches Poll.
This is the third NEIBA poll of the season. Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the season's first poll, announced on Monday, March 26. It was the first time the Bobcats had cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade. In the second NEIBA poll on April 2, the Bobcats dropped from the top five but received votes.
The poll is conducted by New England college baseball coaches in Division I; the top five teams are ranked. There are also polls for Divisions II and III.
HOME SWEET HOME
After playing 26 straight road games over two months to start the season, Quinnipiac finally hosted a visitor at the QU Baseball Field in last weekend's series against Monmouth. The Bobcats' three-game series sweep was the first time they swept the Hawks. The long road exodus sent the Bobcats to such destinations as Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Long Island and New Jersey.
LAST WEEKEND: DRAMATIC DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
Game One
Propelled by the clutch hitting of junior Liam Scafariello and senior Ben Gibson, who tag-teamed for some walk-off magic, the Quinnipiac baseball team took both games of the doubleheader with Monmouth on Sunday to complete the series sweep. The final score of each game was 4-3.
In the first game Sunday, Scafariello provided all four RBI in the Bobcats' victory. He launched a three-run homer over the left-field fence in the fourth inning to give QU a 3-2 lead. After Monmouth knotted the contest 3-3, he stroked a game-winning RBI single in the Bobcats' last at-bat. Scafariello also hit a three-run homer in the Bobcats' 8-3 win on Saturday.
Quinnipiac starter Brandon Shileikis nearly went the distance in the seven-inning game. He pitched 6-1/3 innings, giving up three runs and no walks while striking out three and scattering nine hits. His 3.47 ERA is third-best on the staff among pitchers with at least seven innings pitched this season. His record holds at 3-3 after Sunday's no-decision.
Bobcats senior closer Mike Davis (1-0) got the win.
Game Two
In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, Gibson delivered the walk-off heroics with a game-winning single in the 11th inning.
Bobcats junior Brian Moskey made extra innings possible, going 4-for-5 with two clutch RBI. He also scored the game-winning run. Gibson went 2-for-5 with one run and the game-winning RBI.
Junior reliever Andrew Workman (1-0) got the win, throwing two scoreless innings with a strikeout and a walk. Junior starter Tyler Poulin pitched 6-1/3 innings and allowed no earned runs (three runs overall) and four hits, striking out eight and walking five.
