HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac baseball team started strong Friday and kept on going strong to secure a 12-4 victory over the Siena Saints and extend an unbeaten MAAC record to 7-0.
The Bobcats got going right away.
In the bottom of the first inning, junior Brian Moskey singled with one out. With two outs, Moskey stole second and junior Liam Scafariello walked, setting the table for senior Ben Gibson — who blasted a home run to left field. Just like that, the Bobcats led 3-0.
In the top of the second inning, QU senior starter Taylor Luciani got two quick outs but then surrendered four runs on (in order) three singles, a double and a single, allowing Siena to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Bobcats made some more two-out magic to reclaim the advantage. Freshman Ian Ostberg doubled down the left field line as the prelude to a homer by sophomore Andre Marrero, and the Bobcats had a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Bobcats struck for four runs — and this time the scoring started with fewer than two outs.
Scafariello stroked a leadoff double to left center, and Gibson hit an RBI double to right center. Senior Anthony Cruz singled through the right side, scoring Gibson. After junior Kevin Huscher singled and Cruz advanced to third, Ostberg brought Cruz home via a sacrifice fly.
A pitching change didn't help Siena as Marrero singled to right field and Huscher advanced to third. Before the third inning was over, Moskey had driven in another Bobcats run with a single through the right side, and QU was ahead 9-4.
The Saints threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases on two walks and a bunt single. With one out, Luciani induced a fly ball to short right field that kept the runner at third, and then the 6-foot-1 right-hander summoned a strikeout, leaving three runners stranded and preserving QU's five-run lead.
After the run-happy production of the first three innings, neither team scored in the fourth or fifth. But the Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the sixth — again with two outs. Scafariello singled to left field and stole second. Gibson followed with another single to left, recording his fifth RBI of the day to extend QU's lead to 10-4.
The Bobcats scored two more runs in their next at-bat. Senior Julius Saporito singled up the middle and reached second on a sacrifice by Huscher. Ostberg stroked an RBI single to right field, advanced to second on an outfield error, and scored on a single by Marrero — forging the 12-4 final.
Bobcats hitters warrant plenty of accolades after their 17-hit, 12-run outburst, and five had multi-hit games.
Gibson (team-leading eight home runs) finished his big day just a triple shy of the cycle: 4-for-5 with a double, homer, five RBI and two runs scored. Moskey (team-leading .342 average) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Marrero was 3-for-5 with three RBI, a homer and a run scored. Scafariello went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. And Ostberg was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Luciani (5-2) notched the win, while Siena starter Tommy Miller (3-6) took the loss.
With its undefeated conference record, Quinnipiac is alone in first place in the MAAC.
