Quinnipiac (14-17) — Boston College (12-19)
LOCATION
Brighton Complex — Brighton, Mass.
BRIGHTON, Mass. — The Quinnipiac baseball team started strong in Wednesday's road game against the Boston College Eagles but couldn't prevent BC from rallying and then cruising to a 9-5 nonconference win.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Andre Marrero led off with a walk and junior Brian Moskey singled to left field, moving Marrero to second. With two outs, junior Kyle Horton came up clutch, hitting a double to left field that brought both baserunners home.
The Eagles cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a leadoff triple and an RBI groundout. The score was still 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, when BC tied the game on a single, a stolen base and an RBI single.
In the top of the fifth inning, with the score 2-2, Quinnipiac manufactured some two-out magic. With two gone, sophomore Evan Vulgamore singled and scored on Horton's double to left center. Senior Ben Gibson singled to left center, driving in Horton and giving QU a 4-2 lead.
BC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to cut QU's lead to one at 4-3.
The top of the seventh inning witnessed a highly unusual way to score a run. The Bobcats scored without a hit, which isn't that unusual — but the way they scored this unearned run certainly is uncommon.
Moskey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a groundout. Then Horton struck out swinging, but BC's catcher misplayed the third strike and Horton reached first on a passed ball. Moskey scored an unearned run on the miscue, and QU was up 5-3.
But in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Eagles rallied against freshman reliever Joe Preciado, who replaced senior starter Chris Enns to begin the seventh. BC tallied five runs on five hits to take an 8-5 lead and then tacked on another run in the eighth against freshman reliever Connor Mahoney to seal the 9-5 final.
Preciado (1-1) took the loss. Enns allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits in six innings.
BC redshirt freshman Joey Walsh (2-0) recorded the win in relief of sophomore starter Matt Gill, and reliever Thomas Lane notched his third save.
For Quinnipiac, junior Kevin Huscher, Horton and Moskey had two hits apiece. Moskey, who leads the team with a .330 average, scored two runs and Horton had three RBI.
The Eagles scored their nine runs on 10 hits, while the Bobcats had eight hits and committed one error.

Quinnipiac hosts Siena in a three-game MAAC series on Friday (3 p.m.) and Saturday (doubleheader, 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.) The series was initially scheduled as a Saturday doubleheader and a single game Sunday, but the weather forecast prompted the change.
By the way, the forecast for Sunday is for rain, not snow — a clarification made necessary given the April snowfall that has hit the Quinnipiac campus more than once in the past week or so.
