ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Quinnipiac baseball team has played 22 straight road games to start the 2018 season, and is scheduled to stretch that streak to 26 straight before its home opener on April 7. The Bobcats almost got to break out the home whites against Yale on Tuesday, March 20, but the game was postponed an hour before game time due to field conditions. The beginning of the season has seen the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Long Island.
LAST SERIES AGAINST SAINT PETER'S
The Bobcats swept their three game series against the Peacocks last season. Game 1 was a 13-1 victory in which current senior Chris Enns threw seven strong innings on the hill, striking out six batters and allowing only an unearned run. Current junior Liam Scafariello hit a home run and a double to drive in three runs and current senior Julius Saporito had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and had two RBI. In Game 2 of the series, current senior Taylor Luciani pitched a complete game, allowing only one run on five hits while collecting four strikeouts. Current senior Anthony Cruz drove home a run and current junior Brian Moskey had a pair of hits in the 5-1 victory. In the series finale, the Bobcats blanked the Peacocks, 7-0. Current sophomore Andre Marrero led the way with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in. Current seniors Wyatt Hamilton and Mike Davis each worked a clean inning in relief after Robbie Hitt started the game and worked seven innings.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS
Saint Peter's has lost 14 straight games to begin the 2018 season. The Peacocks are currently batting .166 as a team and own an 11.39 ERA team ERA. Nick Ciocco leads Saint Peter's offensively with a .280 batting average (14-for-50) and is tied for the team lead in doubles (2) and runs batted in (4). Willie Krajnik has been the Peacocks best arm, as he holds an impressive 1.96 ERA in 23 innings pitched over four starts. He currently holds an 0-1 record.
A LITTLE EXTRA
Junior designated hitter Liam Scafariello has made the most of his swings this season. Scafariello leads the team in RBI with 17, thanks to 12 of his 18 hits going for extra bases (eight doubles, one triple, three homers). A year ago, Scafariello had 16 home runs, tying the school's Division I record.
Senior first baseman Ben Gibson has also made his presence felt in the batter's box this year. Gibson leads the Bobcats with five home runs and a .493 slugging percentage. Six of his 17 hits this year have gone for extra bases.
LIGHTS OUT
Senior closer Mike Davis is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season, picking them up in three straight appearances against Old Dominion twice and College of Charleston. A year ago, Davis had a spectacular season from start to finish, ending with nine saves and a 0.96 earned run average, striking out 29 and walking only six.
NEIBA POLL
Quinnipiac was ranked fifth in the first New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll, announced on Monday, March 26. This came after the Bobcats had won eight games in a very tough 20-game road stretch. This was the first time the Bobcats cracked the poll since 2015 and only the second time in the last decade.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish 8th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on February 7, 2018. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish 1st, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara rounding out the top four.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney returns for his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed over 70 wins in his three-plus years as head coach. Quinnipiac won 29 games in 2015, which ties the program record for most wins in a single season.
