HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac baseball team has its final tune-ups before conference play begins when it plays two mid-week road games at Rhode Island on Tuesday and at Dartmouth on Wednesday, before its first MAAC series this weekend at Saint Peter's.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Quinnipiac baseball team has played 20 straight road games to start the 2018 season, and is scheduled to stretch that streak to 26 straight before its home opener on April 7. The Bobcats almost got to break out the home whites against Yale on Tuesday, but the game was postponed an hour before game time due to field conditions. The beginning of the season has seen the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Long Island.
LAST MEETING WITH RHODE ISLAND
The Bobcats traveled to Rhode Island last year and fell on the short end of a 15-5 score. The Bobcats had 13 hits in the game, but 11 came from players who graduated. Current senior Ben Gibson and current junior Brian Moskey had hits for Quinnipiac, while current junior Liam Scafariello had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
LAST MEETING WITH DARTMOUTH
Quinnipiac's scheduled meeting with Dartmouth in Hamden last year was canceled due to weather. The last time the two teams met was in 2016 in Hanover, with the Bobcats coming away with a 5-4 win. Moskey was 2-for-4 with an RBI and current senior Brandon Shileikis threw one inning of shutout relief in the win.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island is 5-15 so far this season, but has played a difficult schedule that has included three games against No. 9 Texas A&M and three against No. 1 Florida. Jordan Powell currently leads the Rams with a .291 batting average and eight runs batted in, while Jackson Coutts is close behind in batting average at .283. Matt Murphy is off to an impressive start on the mound with a 1.74 ERA through his first five starts.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth has had a similar preseason to the Bobcats, playing all 15 of their games on the road so far, including a three-game series at Georgia Tech and nine games on its California trip. The Big Green is 3-12 but has picked up three solid wins, defeating Georgetown and Villanova out of the Big East and Cal State Bakersfield on its West Coast trip. Sean Sullivan is having a monster year so far for Dartmouth, hitting .483 through the first 15 games against tough competition. Cole O'Connor leads the pitching staff with a 3.70 ERA through his first four starts.
A LITTLE EXTRA
Junior designated hitter Liam Scafariello has made the most of his swings this season. Scafariello leads the team in RBI with 15, thanks to 11 of his 16 hits going for extra bases (eight doubles, one triple, two homers). A year ago, Scafariello had 16 home runs, tying the school's Division I record.
LIGHTS OUT
Senior closer Mike Davis is 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season, picking them up in three straight appearances against Old Dominion twice and College of Charleston. A year ago, Davis had a spectacular season from start to finish, ending with nine saves and a 0.96 earned run average, striking out 29 and walking only six.
FRESHMEN STEP UP ON THE MOUND
Quinnipiac pulled off an impressive two-game sweep of Charleston in March after the Cougars came into the series with a 13-3 record. In the Tuesday game, freshman reliever Joe Preciado threw the final three innings without allowing a run to get the win, as the Bobcats came back for a 6-5 victory. In the second game of the series on Wednesday, freshman Robert Lewis got the start and allowed one run over five innings, while fellow freshman Arthur Correira came on to throw two innings of no-hit relief. Preciado still has a 0.00 ERA after four appearances, spanning five innings, while Lewis checks in with a 1.50 ERA and Correira has a 2.77 ERA in seven appearances.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish 8th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on February 7, 2018. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish 1st, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara rounding out the top four.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney returns for his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed 70 wins in his three-plus years as head coach. Quinnipiac won 29 games in 2015, which ties the program record for most wins in a single season. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing No. 3 in the conference standings - their highest regular-season finish in the conference since finishing No. 1 in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
