
QU Softball Splits in Day Two of Orange Blossom Tournament, Defeats Kennesaw State 5-4

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Quinnipiac softball team went 1-1 in day two of the D9 Orange Blossom tournament, picking up its first win of the season in a 5-4 victory over Kennesaw State in extra innings. Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) hit a walk-off two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift the Bobcats over the Owls.
GAME ONE (QU 5, Kennesaw State 4) (9 innings):
GAME TWO (Bethune-Cookman 10, QU 5):
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 18, when Quinnipiac closes the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament with a game against George Washington University at 11:30 a.m.
GAME ONE (QU 5, Kennesaw State 4) (9 innings):
- Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) earned her first win of the season, going nine innings and only giving up one earned run.
- Herzog also struck out eight batters in the win.
- Magana went 3-for-5 in the win and drove in three runs.
- Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) went 3-for-4 with an RBI as well.
- Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) and Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) had a hit apiece, with Cordeiro driving in a run as well.
- The game remained in a scoreless tie until Kennesaw State put up two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
- The Bobcats responded with a run of its own after Magana scored on a Cordeiro RBI single.
- Quinnipiac tied the game at 2-2 after scoring in the bottom of the sixth as well.
- After Marchuk reached base on a one-out single, Kendall Brudrett (San Diego, California) advanced her to second on a groundout.
- Magana singled Marchuk home in the next at-bat.
- The game went into extra innings after both teams failed to score in the seventh inning.
- Both teams scored in the eighth inning, with Marchuk drilling an RBI single to left field to score Brighid Douglas (East Windsor, New Jersey).
- After Kennesaw State scored in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead, the Bobcats had a final opportunity to tie or win it in the bottom of the ninth.
- After Brundrett was placed on second base, Magana drilled a walk-off home run down the left field line to secure the 5-4 win for the Bobcats.
GAME TWO (Bethune-Cookman 10, QU 5):
- Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) suffered the loss in her second start of the season.
- Long struck out three batters in her 2.2 innings of work.
- In 3.1 innings of relief, Brundrett gave up only one earned run.
- Magana went 2-for-4 with two RBI's in the loss.
- Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run.
- Megan Dyson (Bellmawr, New Jersey), Courtney and Cordeiro all picked up one hit apiece in the loss.
- Quinnipiac fell behind early as Bethune-Cookman scored two runs in the first two innings.
- However, the Bobcats responded with four runs in the top of the third inning.
- After Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) led the inning off reaching base after catcher's interference, Magana hit an RBI double to score Czaja but Magana was called out trying to stretch the double into a triple.
- Courtney followed by getting hit by a pitch, then Cordeiro singled to put runners on first and second base.
- Drake followed by blasting a three-run homer to center field to give the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.
- Bethune-Cookman took a 7-4 lead after scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
- Quinnipiac scored once more in the top of the fifth after Magana scored Dyson on an RBI double.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 18, when Quinnipiac closes the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament with a game against George Washington University at 11:30 a.m.
