2018 SEASON OPENER
This weekend the Quinnipiac softball team will kick off its 2018 spring season in Orlando, Florida for the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament, hosted by the University of Central Florida. The Bobcats will play five games over three days at the tournament to start its season.
SCOUTING NORTHERN IOWA
The Panthers are coming into the tournament with a 4-1 record so far this season. Sammey Bunch leads the Panthers with a .643 batting average, one home run and five RBI's on the season. Jaclyn Spencer leads the pitching staff with a 2-0 record, two complete games and one shutout.
SCOUTING FLORIDA A&M
The Rattlers come into the tournament with a 1-2 record this season. Hera Varmah leads the team with one home run and two RBI's, while the pitching staff is led by Veroni Burse who is 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA and eight strikeouts.
SCOUTING KENNESAW STATE
Much like Quinnipiac, the Owls will open their season with the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament. Kennesaw State finished last season with a 40-20 record, including an 11-6 record in the Big South. The Owls return Noelle Winkles, who finished last season with a .360 batting average, eight home runs and 41 RBI's.
SCOUTING BETHUNE-COOKMAN
The Panthers come into the tournament with a 2-3 record. Ryan Jackson has been the biggest threat in the lineup as she boasts a .313 batting average, with three home runs and four RBI's.Victoria Guzman leads the pitching staff with a 1-1 record, one save, 13 strikeouts and a 1.37 ERA.
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
Much like Quinnipiac and Kennesaw State, the Colonials will open their season at the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament. George Washington finished last season 28-24, including an 11-12 record in the A-10. The Colonials return top hitter Jenna Cone, who finished last season with a .395 batting average, 18 home runs and 59 RBI's. George Washington also returns top pitcher Sarah Costlow, who led the pitching staff with 10 wins, a 2.52 ERA and 59 strikeouts.
THE MAAC PRESEASON POLL
The Quinnipiac University softball team was picked to finish eighth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018.
DRAKE SZN
Junior infielder Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) was named to the Preseason All-MAAC team. Drake was the lone Quinnipiac selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Team and is the first Bobcat player to be selected since Nikki Barba and Jordan Paolucci were selected prior to the 2015 season. Last season as a sophomore, Drake earned First Team All-MAAC honors after starting in all 50 games for the Bobcats and tying the program-record for most hits in a single season with 66. Drake led Quinnipiac with a .407 batting average and 28 RBI's. Drake was also tied for second on the team with five home runs.

Quinnipiac returns 13 players from last year's squad, 10 of which are juniors or seniors. Quinnipiac returns all five of the teams' hits leaders in Drake (66), Miranda Magana (56) (Santa Paula, California), Erin Larsen (40) (Kissimmee, Florida), Keala Cordeiro (39) (Huntington Beach, California) and Lexi Courtney (34) (Scappoose, Oregon).
THE MAGANA SHOW
Last season Magana led the Bobcats last season with 30 runs and six home runs, along with finishing second with 11 doubles and a .329 batting average.
FINLEY RETURNS
Of the 13 players returning, one is red-shirt senior Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) who missed all but six games last season due to injury. In Finley's last full season in 2016, she started in all 57 games with a .263 batting average and team-high four home runs and 22 RBI's.
BOBCATS IN THE CIRCLE
Quinnipiac returns all three of its pitchers from last season in Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York), Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) and Kendall Brundrett (San Diego). Long led the team with 11 wins and a 3.39 ERA last season, which earned her a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection. Herzog finished with 10 wins and a 3.44 ERA, while leading the team with four shutouts and 106 strikeouts.

Three new players join the Bobcats in three freshman, Megan Montalto (Rye, New York), Brighid Douglas (East Windsor, New Jersey) and Haley Hulitt (Bridgeton, New Jersey).

Head coach Jill Karwoski will guide Quinnipiac in her fifth season at the helm in the hopes of improving on a 2017 season that saw Quinnipiac finish the year at 23-27 overall.

The Bobcats will take some time off after competing in the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament before heading to Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, Mar. 2 for the Towson University Invite. Quinnipiac will play four games in three days at the tournament, taking on Bucknell and Saint John's twice, while only playing Towson once.
