
QU Softball Falls Short Against Northern Iowa and Florida A&M in Season Opener

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team fell just short in both of its games to open its season at the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament on Friday, Feb. 16. The Bobcats fell to Northern Iowa, 2-1, in the opening game before falling just short of a complete comeback in a 6-5 loss against Florida A&M.
GAME ONE (UNI 2, QU1):
GAME TWO (FAMU 6, QU 5):
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17, when Quinnipiac takes on Kennesaw State at 1:30 p.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 4:00 p.m. at the D9 Orange Bloom Tournament.
GAME ONE (UNI 2, QU1):
- Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) got the loss in a stellar outing.
- Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
- Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) went 2-for-3 and scored the Bobcats' lone run in the loss.
- Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) picked up a hit in the loss as well.
- Herzog gave up two runs on only three hits and struck out five batters in six innings of work.
- Northern Iowa broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second after the Panthers scored on a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Bobcats were able to tie the game in the top of the third.
- Marchuk led the inning off with a single and advanced to second after Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) grounded out.
- Magana followed with a single up the middle to plate Marchuk and tie the game at 1-1.
- The game remain tied until Northern Iowa scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
GAME TWO (FAMU 6, QU 5):
- Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) got the start for the Bobcats and took the loss.
- Long pitched six innings and gave up only one earned run, while striking out four batters.
- Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida), Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) and Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) had two hits and ran RBI apiece in the loss.
- Long drove in a run as well.
- The Rattlers struck first, scoring all six of their runs in the second inning.
- After a few scoreless innings, the Bobcats responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
- Cordeiro led reached on a one-out single and Larsen drove her home after she belted a triple to right field.
- Long immediately followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it a 6-2 game.
- Quinnipiac tacked on another run in the fifth after Magana led off with a single and scored after Courtney doubled to cut the deficit to three runs.
- The Bobcats scored two more runs in the fifth after freshmen Brighid Douglas (East Windsor, New Jersey) and Megan Montalto (Rye, New York) scored on a fielding error.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17, when Quinnipiac takes on Kennesaw State at 1:30 p.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 4:00 p.m. at the D9 Orange Bloom Tournament.
