HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer begins postseason play on Thursday, as the No. 2 Bobcats host No. 3 Marist in a 2018 MAAC Tournament semifinal contest from the Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium. The winner will advance to the 2018 MAAC Tournament championship.
WINNING WAYS
- Quinnipiac enters postseason play having won 10 of its last 12 contests, outscoring opponents 26-8 in that span.
- The program has now appeared in the MAAC Tournament semifinal round in each of the last three years. The Bobcats have qualified for the postseason in each of the last seven years, and eight of the last 11.
- Marist enters action at 8-5-4 overall, going 6-2-2 in league play this year.
- The Red Foxes topped Saint Peter's on Sunday, Nov. 4 (1-0) in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Tournament, as Allen Gavilanes scored the lone goal in the win.
- Gavilanes leads the program in scoring this year with 16 total points (five goals, six assists).
- Quinnipiac is 5-2-2 all-time vs. Marist.
- The Bobcats finished the 2018 regular season in impressive fashion on Oct. 31, as five different Bobcats scored in a 6-0 rout of Monmouth.
- Six goals marks the most single-game scores Quinnipiac has had in its Division I program history. The Bobcats also had five different goal scorers, also the most in Division I program history.
- Quinnipiac head coach Eric Da Costa is in his 14th season at the helm of the Bobcats' program, becoming the longest tenured men's soccer coach in Quinnipiac's NCAA history.
- With the win on Sept. 26 at Canisius, Da Costa secured his 100th career victory as the Bobcats' head coach. He now has 107 total wins in his career at Quinnipiac.
- Quinnipiac men's soccer junior forward Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn.) has been tabbed 2018 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
- The Bobcats earned five awards in total, three All-MAAC First Team honorees (Eamon Whelan, Rashawn Dally, Jeppe Haehre) and two All-Rookie Team selections (Dejan Duric, Jordon Bennett).
- 10 Quinnipiac student-athletes were also named to the All-Academic squad: Christian Casagranda, Oscar Evans, Colton Grob, Simon Hillinger, Chrysostomos Iakovidis, Griffin Kutzner, Derek Parker, Griffin Scaglia, Paulo Soares and Eamon Whelan. The Bobcats finished with the second-highest total number of student-athletes to make the list. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must finish at least two semesters at their institution and must hold at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
EAMON'S EXCELLENCE
- Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn.) has scored 12 goals in Quinnipiac's 17 matches, the most of any MAAC player in 2018.
- Whelan was the unanimous choice for the league's Offensive Player of the Year award, and is Quinnipiac's first MAAC Offensive Player of the Year since the Bobcats joined the league in 2013.
- The junior led the MAAC in points (27), points per game (1.69), goals (12), and goals per game (0.75) during the regular season. Whelan, a two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2018, was also selected to the All-MAAC First Team.
- He scored eight goals in league play, tallying a goal in seven of 10 conference contests. Whelan enters Thursday's MAAC semifinal contest having recorded a point in seven of the last nine games.
- Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) has now played in 77 career contests, which ranks No. 6 in Quinnipiac program history.
- Dally joined Whelan as an All-MAAC First Team selection, recording five goals and six assists in 2018 to finish second on the team in total scoring (16 points). Dally recorded 15 points (five goals, five assists) in conference play, and enters the postseason having recorded a point in four of his last five games.
- Dally ranks tied for No. 4 in the MAAC in total points this year.
MIGHTY MAZZOLA
- Jarred Mazzola (Katonah, N.Y.) has started 12 of the last 14 games in net for the Bobcats, earning a win in nin3 of his last 10 starts.
- The goalkeeper has posted a 0.73 goals-against average in his first year with the program, which ranks No. 10 all-time in the MAAC for a single season.

- Quinnipiac head coach Eric Da Costa named the program's leadership council for 2018, which includes senior Derek Parker (Cromwell, Conn.), senior Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland), junior Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland), sophomore Paulo Soares (Quincy, MA), and sophomore Simon Hillinger (Ditzingen, Germany).
- Quinnipiac went 8-9-2 (6-2-0 MAAC) in 2017, earning the No. 5 seed in the 2017 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship.
- The Bobcats defeated No. 4 Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals, then fell in penalty kicks at No. 1 Fairfield in the semifinal round.
