HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with MAAC rival Manhattan, winning game one, 4-1 and losing game two 10-2 at the QU Softball Field.
With the split, the Bobcats keep their playoff hopes alive and move to 22-16 (8-10 MAAC), while the Jaspers move to 32-18 (12-6 MAAC).
The softball team celebrated its Senior Day prior to the start of game one, honoring the careers of seniors of Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) and Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York). Between the two games, Heimbach reached base twice and scored once, while Vitale scored twice on the day.
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) lead the offensive charge in game one, going two-for-three with two RBIs. Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) and Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) chipped in an RBI apiece. Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) earned the win in game one, going the distance while allowing no earned runs on two hits while striking out seven.
It was a pitcher's duel as neither team scored a run until Manhattan scored on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. However, that would be the only run the Bobcats would surrender.
Quinnipiac answered back in the top of the inning, scoring four runs. Vitale drew a walk to lead off the frame, followed with a Herzog single. Two batters later Heimbach walked to load the bases for Magana, who followed with a two-run single on the second pitch she saw. Cordeiro stepped to the plate with a runner on first and third, then proceeded to hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field, driving in Heimbach to take a 3-1 lead. Courtney then pinch-hit for Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) and singled to score Magana to seal Quinnipiac's 4-1 win.
In game two, Quinnipiac's offense came off the bat of Larsen, who blasted a two-run homer to left field. However, it was not enough to overcome Manhattan, who tallied 10 runs in six innings.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, May 7, as they travel to take on MAAC foe Fairfield in a doubleheader, with game one beginning at noon.
