Rebecca Drake Ties Single-Season Hit Record
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Quinnipiac softball team concluded its regular season after splitting with MAAC rival Fairfield at Alumni Softball Field Sunday afternoon, winning game one 7-5 and falling in game two 9-3.
With the split, Quinnipiac moves to 23-27 (9-11 MAAC), virtually ending the Bobcats season, while Fairfield moves to 22-26 (11-9 MAAC).
Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) recorded five hits on the day, pushing her season total to 66 hits, which ties the program single-season record.
The Bobcats took game one behind a solid offensive attack. Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) and Drake each went 3-for-4 from the plate with a two-run home run each. Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) and Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) both went 2-for-4 with Heimbach driving in a run.
Quinnipiac got on the board first after Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) lead off the third inning with a double. Three batters later, Heimbach drilled a single down the left field line, driving in Heimbach to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac added to its total in the fourth after Drake hit a double to kick off the inning. Two batter later Courtney blasted a two-run shot over the fence for her fifth homer of the season, pushing the Bobcats' lead to 3-0.
Quinnipiac took a commanding five run lead after Heimbach hit a one-out single in the fifth then stole second base. Magana then singled, but the left fielder committed an error that allowed Magana and Heimbach to score, bringing the score to 5-0.
Despite Fairfield tallying three runs, Quinnipiac closed the game after Drake hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh, to secure the Bobcats win.
However, the Bobcats would not maintain momentum in game two. The Bobcats scored two runs early, but Fairfield matched with two runs of its own, then scored seven runs in the third inning.
Drake doubled in the fifth inning, recording her 66th hit of the season, which ties a single-season program record. Drake finishes the season with a team-high .407 batting average with five home runs and a team-high 28 RBIs.
