HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac Director of Athletics and Recreation Greg Amodio has announced that women's basketball's Adily Martucci and men's tennis' Kei Ezaka have been recognized as the Quinnipiac Athletics Senior Athletes of the Year, as announced at the first-annual Quinnipiac Athletics Senior Recognition Awards Luncheon.
In addition to Martucci and Ezaka, men's ice hockey's Derek Smith and field hockey's Angie King were recognized as the Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Women's soccer's Joanna Proctor was the recipient of the first-ever Bobcat Award, which was created to recognize the individual that best exemplifies the Quinnipiac student-athlete. Men's basketball's Daniel Harris delivered the student-athlete address.
Martucci led Quinnipiac women's basketball to its most successful season in program history as she played a major role in the Bobcats advancement to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. Martucci was an All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Second Team selection after leading the Bobcats to three MAAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Martucci garnered 2017 MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors after averaging a team-high 16.3 points-per-game. She then led the underdog Bobcats to a pair of upsets on their way to become the fourth 12th seed in NCAA Tournament history to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Her two most memorable plays included a late blocked shot and a huge three-pointer in the closing minute to cap a win against Miami.
Ezaka recently completed one of the most impressive careers in Quinnipiac men's tennis history as he broke the program record for career wins on his way to earning All-MAAC honors for the fourth consecutive season. Ezaka was the 2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year before earning All-MAAC Second Team honors in 2015 and First Team in 2016. Last season, he also became the first Quinnipiac player to win the MAAC Player of the Year award. This season, he earned All-MAAC First Team Singles and Second Team Doubles. Off the tennis court, he was a three-year member of S.A.A.C. where he participated in multiple community service initiatives.
Smith's latest academic honor comes he became the first men's ice hockey player to win the prestigious ECAC Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in 2017. Smith currently carries a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average and has been recognized as the top Scholar-Athlete for his class for each of his four year's at Quinnipiac. He is a recipient of the Quinnipiac University Most Outstanding Academic Achievement Award as a freshman in the school of business, and has been recognized as one of the top students in his class. On the ice, he was a senior captain in 2016-17 that made its fifth-consecutive ECAC Hockey Semifinal appearance. In addition, this year's senior class was one of six to win 20 games in each of their four years while their 102 total wins were the second most in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey.
King was recently honored as the top senior in the school of communication and will graduate with a 4.0 grade-point average. For her four-year career, King was a four-time SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distincton, a three-time Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad designee and named to three times to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll. On the field, King was a 2016 All-BIG EAST selection after back-to-back years as an All-MAAC honoree and also an All-Region selection in 2015 and 2016. This past year, she played in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game after leading NCAA Division I field hockey in defensive saves for the second-straight season. For her efforts, King became the first NCAA Division I field hockey student-athlete to lead the country in defensive saves in consecutive seasons and the first Quinnipiac student-athlete to lead the country in a statistical category in consecutive seasons.
Finally, Proctor was awarded the first-ever Bobcat Award as a model Quinnipiac student-athlete. Proctor is a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree and led the Bobcats to the 2016 MAAC Championship Game as a senior captain. She has logged over 4,800 minutes across 64 career games and served as a leader since setting foot on campus. Proctor has held a leadership role in Quinnipiac's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, coordinating and facility Quinnipiac's annual Christmas Toy Drive, Thanksgiving Food Drive and the immensely popular "Bobcats Off Broadway" fundraiser. She has also coordinated efforts for women's soccer's visits to several elementary schools.
