BACK ON THE ROAD
After completing it's six-game home stand, the Quinnipiac softball team will hit the road to take on the Monmouth Hawks in an afternoon doubleheader on Sunday, April 9, scheduled to start at noon on ESPN3.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Monmouth is off to an 9-18 start to the season and are 1-1 in MAAC play. The Hawks' offense is lead by Justene Reyes, who boasts a team-high .333 batting average, with three home runs and a team-high 19 RBIs.
LAST TIME VS MONMOUTH
Quinnipiac went 0-3 last season against Monmouth, including an 8-7 loss in the MAAC semifinals. Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) led the offense with a season-best performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 in the game with a solo home run. She was the only Bobcat to record three hits in a MAAC Tournament game, which also marked her first such game of the season. Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) added a second Bobcat home run in the game.
LAST TIME OUT
Last time time the Bobcats took the field, Quinnipiac swept Rider in a Monday doubleheader, 5-2 and 2-0.
THE LONG WAY
Freshman pitcher Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) was named MAAC Softball Rookie of the Week and MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Month as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, April 4.
Long's stellar performance on the field and in the classroom helped her earn the weekly awards. Long is also the first player on the Quinnipiac softball team to earn the Rookie of the Week honors and this is her first Student-Athlete of the Month award as well.
Long, a mathematics/secondary education major, earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in her first collegiate semester in the fall.
During Quinnipiac's six-game homestand, Long went 3-0, boasting a 1.05 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 20 innings of work.
Long pitched a three-hit, complete game effort in a 2-1 win over Hartford. Long went six innings in her start against Saint Peter's, giving up two runs, with one walk and five strikeouts. Long saved her best performance for last as she pitched a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts against Rider.
NEARLY UNHITTABLE
Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) went 2-1 during Quinnipiac's six-game homestand, going the distance in all three starts (21 total innings) with a 0.67 ERA and 14 strikeouts in that stretch. In Quinnipiac's 5-0 win over Hartford, Herzog tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout. She only walked two batters and struck out three. In her start against Saint Peter's, Herzog gave up one earned run while striking out six batters. To round out the week, Herzog gave up one earned run to Rider, while striking out five.
MORE LIFE
Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) has injected life into Quinnipiac's lineup this season. Drake boasts a team-best .391 batting average and has slugged four homers and driven in 18 runs. Drake also boasts an incredible .630 slugging percentage.
MARVELOUS MAGANA
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) has been one of the team's most consistent hitters so far this season. In 29 games, Magana has an impressive .361 batting average with a team-high six home runs and 18 RBIs. Magana also leads all everyday players with a .660 slugging percentage.
ROUGHING THE RIGHTIES
Drake and Magana have hammered right-handed pitching so far this season. Drake is 33-for-79 (.418) against righties, while Magana is 30-for-82 (.366) against righties.
SEND 'EM HOME
Quinnipiac has a .279 batting average with runners in scoring position this season. Drake is an astounding 12-for-27 (.444) with runners in scoring position, Larsen is hitting .370 and Magana is hitting .333 with RISP.
FIVE RUNS OR LESS
Quinnipiac is 14-4 on the season when it holds its opponents to five runs or less.
