QU Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Monmouth, 2-1 and 2-1

WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey - The Quinnipiac softball team fell to Monmouth on the road in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, 2-1 and 2-1, at the Monmouth Softball Park.

With the losses, Quinnipiac falls to 14-17 (3-3 MAAC), while Monmouth improves to 12-19 (4-2 MAAC).

Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) lead the offense in game one for the Bobcats, going 1-for-3 from the plate with the an RBI.

It was a pitching duel in game one, with neither team scoring a run until late in the game. Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) cruised through the first five innings without giving up a run, but surrendered two in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Quinnipiac tried to rally in the seventh inning but fell just short. With two outs and no one on, Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) and Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Marchuk then stepped to the plate and belted a double to left center, scoring Larsen. Herzog then stepped to the plate with a chance to tie the game, but flew out to center, cementing Quinnipiac's 2-1 loss.

Despite taking the loss in game one, Herzog had a solid outing. Herzog went six innings, only giving up two earned runs, while striking out six.

The Bobcats found themselves in a familiar situation in game two, trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) lifted a home run over the right-centerfield fence, to bring the score to 2-1. However, that would not be enough as Monmouth was able to get out of the late jam to hold onto the win.

Despite suffering the loss, Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) had a solid performance as well. Long went six innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out four.

Quinnipiac will be back in action on Tuesday, April 11, when the Bobcats host Sacred Heart in a doubleheader at the QU Softball Field, with game one set to start at 3 p.m.
