QU Softball Drops Doubleheader to Canisius, 4-3 and 7-6

BUFFALO, New York - The Quinnipiac softball team dropped a doubleheader on the road against MAAC foe Canisius, 4-3 and 7-6, on Sunday, April 30.
With the losses, Quinnipiac falls to 21-25 (7-9 MAAC), while Canisius improves to 19-31 (7-10 MAAC).
It took extra innings for the Golden Griffins to get past the Bobcats in game one. Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) led the offense for Quinnipiac, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, as well as scoring twice. Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) added an RBI, Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) and Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) chipped in a hit apiece as well.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the top of the third. Cordeiro hit a two-out triple to right field, then scored on the next at-bat on a wild pitch to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Canisius took a 3-1 lead after tallying all three runs in the bottom of the third on a three-run home run. However, the Bobcats were able to tie the score with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) led the inning off with a walk, then Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) moved Magana to second after a sac-bunt. Two batters later, Cordeiro roped an RBI double in the right center field gap to cut the deficit to 3-2. Quinnipiac tied the game after Drake and Herzog hit back-to-back singles, with Herzog's driving in Cordeiro to knot the contest at 3-3.
However, the three runs were not enough as Canisius added a run with two outs in the eighth to earn the walk-off 4-3 win.
Quinnipiac's offense continued to produce runs, as it poured in six runs in game two. Larsen and Drake combined to go 6-for-9 with two RBIs and Cordeiro chipped in an RBI off a solo home run as well.
The Bobcats struck first in game two, scoring twice in the first inning. Heimbach led the inning with a walk and stolen base, then scored on a Larsen single. Magana followed with a double in the right center field gap, scoring Larsen to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the second, before Canisius scored twice in the bottom of the second to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 3-2. Quinnipiac added to its lead after Cordeiro sent a 3-2 pitch over the left center field fence in the third inning to give Quinnipiac a 4-2 lead. The homer was Cordeiro's fourth of the season, which is tied for second on the team.
Canisius rallied in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead, staging a Quinnipiac comeback in the seventh inning.
Larsen and Magana led the seventh off with back-to-back singles to set up runners on first and second with no outs. Two batter's later, Drake hit a ground-rule double to right field, scoring Larsen to cut the score to 6-5. Two batters later, Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut singled to the pitcher, scoring Magana to tie the game at six.
However, like game one, Canisius would walk-off in extra innings, this time in the eighth to win 7-6.
Quinnipiac softball will be back in action on Saturday, May 6 as the Bobcats welcome Manhattan to the QU Softball Field for Senior Day at noon.
