NIAGARA FALLS, New York - The Quinnipiac softball team dropped a doubleheader on the road against MAAC-foe Niagara, 2-0 and 8-6 on Saturday, April 29.
With the losses, Quinnipiac falls to 21-23 (7-7 MAAC), while Niagara improves to 17-23 (8-8 MAAC).
Despite falling 2-0 in game two, Quinnipiac received a great start from Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin). Long went six innings, while giving up just one earned run and striking out seven.
The Bobcats bounced back from game one to score six runs in game two. Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) and Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) both hit home runs in the contest, with Herzog's being a grand slam.
Quinnipiac fell behind early, as Niagara tallied eight runs in the first four innings to take an 8-0 lead heading into the fifth.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) doubled to center field, followed by a Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) single. Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) drew a walk to load the bases for Herzog. Herzog then put the Bobcats on the board after she hit a grand slam to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Quinnipiac added another run in the sixth after Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) reached on a bunt single, then scored on the next play after an error in the field.
The Bobcats added one more in the Larsen led the inning off with a solo home run, cutting the deficit to two runs. However, that would be the only run Quinnipiac scored in the inning, cementing it 8-6 loss.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Sunday, April 30, when the Bobcats hit the road to take on MAAC-rival Canisius in a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
