Batten, Scafariello Hit Milestones; Gibson Blasts Grand Slam
Quinnipiac fell behind early in the first game and despite showing life late in the game, lost 10-4. Despite the outcome, a pair of Bobcats inched closer to making history. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, giving him 239 career hits and sole possession of the No. 2 spot in program history.
Batten trails Tim Binkoski (244) by five hits. In addition, Batten's three runs scored give him 135 for his career, moving him into sixth place all-time at Quinnipiac. He also
continued his trek to 100 career RBI's with No. 96 and 97 today.
Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) also blasted two home runs in the first game to give him 15 for the year. In the process, he passed Nate Noyes (14) for second place and now trails Joe Zangari (16) for the program record.
Mike Palladino (Rockville Center, New York) was 4-for-8 for the day while Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) blasted a grand slam in the second game, which stood as the difference in the Bobcats win. Gibson swung the bat well against Canisius, as he also connected for a double that hit the top of the fence to stay in the park and also flew out to the warning track in his final at-bat of the afternoon.
On the mound, Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Connecticut) picked up his third win of the year after pitching 5 1/3 strong innings to keep Quinnipiac ahead in Game 2. In the first game, Canisius jumped all over Quinnipiac starter Chris Enns and handed him his second loss of the season. The Bobcats received a strong showing from Wyatt Hamilton (Falmouth, Massachusetts) who gave up two runs – one earned – on four hits over five innings in relief of Enns. Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, New Jersey) appeared in both games to expand his program record to 67 appearances for his career while Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) logged the final four outs of Game 2 for his seventh save of the season.
Quinnipiac and Canisius square-off in the final game of their three-game set on Sunday, Apr. 30 at 12 p.m. at the QU Baseball Field. Prior to the start of the game, Quinnipiac will honor Joseph Burns, Matthew Batten, Ryan Nelson, Mike Palladino, Matthew Osieja, Matthew Oestreicher, Gregory Egan, Alex Vargas and Wyatt Hamilton as part of 2017 Quinnipiac Baseball Senior Day.
Game 1
- Canisius used a four-run first inning and another run in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
- Scafariello drove in all four of Quinnipiac's runs in the first game of their twin-bill as he crushed a pair of two-run homers. Scafariello also homered twice against Texas-San Antonio on Feb. 19 while he also drove in four runs on two other occasions.
- Canisius scored again in the fifth before a four-run eighth doomed the Bobcats' comeback bid.
- Mike DellaMadaglia (Somers, New York) pitched 1 1/3 of perfect baseball in relief for the Bobcats to close out the game.
Game 2
- Canisius once-again jumped out to a one-run lead in their first at-bats, but stranded three batters. The Golden Griffins put their first three batters on place before Luciani retired the next three he faced. Luciani then went on to sit down the next five batters he faced.
- Gibson's grand slam in the bottom half of the inning was his third homer of the year, and scored Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut), Scafariello and Palladino.
- Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) had a run-scoring double to follow Gibson to give Quinnipiac a 5-1 lead.
- Batten's second home run of the year moved him into second place in career hits (239) as he also scored Palladino.
- Canisius scored three runs in the fifth, capped off by a two-run home by Christ Conley before Davis slammed the door.
