Bobcats win in Walk-Off Fashion Behind Czaja's Double in Game Two
With the split, Quinnipiac moves to 21-21 (7-5 MAAC), while Siena moves to 14-25 (9-5 MAAC).
Despite losing game one, the Bobcats offense recorded six runs. Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss. Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California), Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon), Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) and Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) recorded an RBI apiece.
Freshman Megan Dyson (Bellmawr, New Jersey) recorded her first hit of her collegiate career in the loss as well.
The Bobcats fell behind 7-0 before they would score their first run in the bottom of the third. Czaja drew a leadoff walk then two batters later Larsen drew a walk as well. With two outs and runners on first and second, Drake lined a single to left center field to put Quinnipiac on the board.
The Saints would add another run before Quinnipiac would score again. In the bottom of the fifth, Magana, Larsen and Drake hit back-to-back-to-back singles to bring the score to 8-2. Cordeiro then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Larsen to cut the deficit to 5.
Siena would add two more runs before the game was over, but Quinnipiac tried to mount a comeback in the late innings. The Bobcats added a run in the sixth after a Troyan RBI groundout, then tacked on two more in the seventh to bring the score to 10-6. The Bobcats had a chance to tie the game after loading the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Troyan popped out in foul territory to end the game.
However, the Bobcats responded in dramatic fashion in game two.
Quinnipiac struck first in the fourth inning after Courtney hit a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Siena tied it in the sixth, but that would be the only run that the Saints would plate.
The Bobcats looked to win it in the seventh inning after Troyan lead the inning off with a single to left. Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) pinch-ran for Troyan and was able to reach second after Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) dropped down a sacrifice-bunt. Czaja then stepped to the plate and belted a double down the left field line, scoring Vitale for the walk-off win.
The Quinnipiac softball team will be back in action on Saturday, April 29, when the Bobcats travel to take on Niagara in a MAAC doubleheader. The Bobcats will then bounce back and take on Canisius in a doubleheader in Buffalo, New York on Sunday, April 30.
