NEW ROCHELLE, New York - The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader with Iona, with the Gaels taking game one 8-0 and the Bobcats winning game two 6-1, on Saturday afternoon.
With the split, Quinnipiac moves to 20-20 (6-4 MAAC), while Iona moves to 19-19 (8-4 MAAC).
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) went 1-for-3 in the Bobcats' game one loss, but Quinnipiac's bats came alive in game two.
Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) drove in two runs in game two, Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts), Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida), Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) and Magana all had an RBI each as well.
Quinnipiac got on the board first, striking for two runs in the third inning. Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) lead off with a single, then Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) pinch-ran for her. Vitale was able to advance to third after two wild pitches, then two batters later, Larsen singled her home. Later in the inning, Cordeiro roped a single to left center, plating Larsen.
The Bobcats struck for four more runs in the sixth inning, rallying the entire time with two outs. With two outs in the inning, Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) reached base on an error, then Czaja doubled to plate Heimbach to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
A few batters later, Magana stepped to the box with runners on first and third and she singled to score Czaja. Larsen drew a walk to load the bases, then Drake lined a two-run single down the right field line to give the Bobcats a six-run lead.
The six runs were more than enough for Long as she went the distance, surrendering just one run on four hits, while striking out two.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, April 23, when Quinnipiac hosts MAAC rival Siena in a doubleheader at the QU Softball Field. Game one is set to begin at noon.
