WEST POINT, New York - The Quinnipiac softball split a Thursday afternoon doubleheader against Army West Point on the road, winning 2-1 and falling 4-0.
With the split, the Bobcats move to 19-19 (5-3 MAAC) on the season, while Army moves to 28-16.
Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) and Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) lead the offensive charge, as they drove in the lone runs for the Bobcats in game one.
Courtney put the Bobcats on the board first in the top of the second, as she launched her third home run of the season over the right-center field fence to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac tallied a second run in the top of the sixth to ensure victory. Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) drilled a leadoff double to right-center field, then Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) singled to set runners up on first and third with no outs. Cordeiro then stepped into the box and lined out to deep right field, allowing Drake to score on the sacrifice to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
The two runs were enough for Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) who earned the win for the Bobcats. Herzog went the distance, tossing seven innings, giving up just one run while striking out four.
Quinnipiac fell 4-0 in game two, as the team struggled to muster a run against the stout Black Knights.
Despite not scoring a run, Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) tallied two hits. Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York), Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts), Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut), Larsen, Courtney and Drake all recorded hits as well
.
Kendall Brundrett (San Diego, California) was impressive in relief as she pitched 3.1 innings of shutout ball while relinquishing just one hit.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, April 22, when Quinnipiac travels to take on MAAC rival Iona in a doubleheader. The Bobcats will then return home for a MAAC doubleheader against Siena on Sunday afternoon.
