HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac baseball team used a four-run 8th inning to propel them to a 7-4 victory over the Marist Red Foxes to capture their first MAAC win of the season. With the victory, the Bobcats move to 8-14 on the season and 1-3 in the MAAC, while the Foxes fall to 12-9 on the season and 2-2 in the MAAC.
The Bobcats headed into the bottom of the 8th inning trailing, 4-3. The Bobcats' offense erupted for five hits en route to a four-run inning that sealed the victory Saturday afternoon. Quinnipiac strung together eight hits for the day and saw two-RBI outings from Evan Vulgamore (Bow, Massachusetts), Matt Batten (Southington, Connecticut) and Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut). Scafariello's tape-measure shot to left-center field capped the Bobcats' big 8th inning as his season total reaches nine.
The Bobcats also received their longest outing of the season from a starter in Taylor Luciani (Berling, Connecticut) who scattered five hits over seven innings. Luciani was tagged for four runs, only two of which were earned. Quinnipiac once-again received dominant relief from Chris Enns (Canton, Connecticut) who allowed one baserunner while striking out two batters to pick up his first win as a Bobcat with a dominant eighth inning. Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) then converted his team-leading third save of the season with a perfect 9th.
Marist tacked on runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings before pushing two across in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Bobcats then posted a three-run 6th inning before their big four-run 8th. In the 6th, Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) got on to lead off the inning with a walk, and Cruz followed up with a walk of his own. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) loaded the bases with a single through the left side.
The Bobcats got on the board when Vulgamore was hit by a pitch, forcing in Moskey. With the bases still loaded, Batten hit an RBI ground out to the third baseman, scoring Cruz and drawing the Bobcats within two. Quinnipiac finished off their three-run 6th inning when Joseph Burn (Shelton, Connecticut) reached on an error by Marist's shortstop, allowing Palladino to score, cutting the Red Foxes' lead to one, 4-3.
In the 8th, Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) started the inning off with a single up the middle. After a groundout advanced Cruz to second base with only one out, Vulgamore delivered a sharp-hit ball through the right side for a hit, scoring Cruz and tying the game at four.
Batten continued the hit-fest, singling up the middle and scoring Vulgamore to push the Bobcats to the first lead of the day, 5-4. The exclamation point came when Scafariello demolished a two-run home run to left-center field, giving Quinnipiac a 7-4 lead. Scafariello's home run was his ninth long ball of the season, which places him tied for sixth in the nation.
The two teams will resume their three-game series Monday, April 2 when they play a doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. start with the second game to start 30 minutes following the first game's completion.
