PRINCETON, N.J. – The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team gave No. 19 Princeton a solid battle for much of the game, but the Tigers offense led by Austin Sims (six goals) proved to be too much as they earned a 17-13 win over the Bobcats on Tuesday evening at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
With the loss, the Bobcats slip to 1-3 on the season, while Princeton improves to 4-1, including an 18-7 win over then-No. 3 Johns Hopkins in its last outing on Friday.
The Bobcats trailed by five at the half, but scored the first three goals of the second half to make it a two-goal game. Junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had two of the goals, giving him a hat trick for the fourth time in four games to start the season, while junior midfielder Blaise Buffalino (Lido Beach, N.Y.) added one. After Princeton stopped the run, Buffalino had a pretty feed while falling down to a cutting Drew D"Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.) to make the score 11-9.
Princeton got a momentum swing in the final minute of the third when it drew a delayed penalty and Sims scored to make it 12-9 to end the period and then Gavin McBride scored quickly on the EMO to start the fourth to stretch the lead to 13-9. The Bobcats answered, though, as sophomore midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.) circled in front of the cage to make it a 13-10 game with 11:53 to go.
Quinnipiac had several chances to cut it to a two-goal game, but were unable to convert, and Princeton went on a 4-0 run to seal it, with Sims scoring two of them to push his goal total to six. Sophomore midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) scored three late goals to make the final score 17-1e, including a blind over-the-shoulder shot for his fiinal tally.
Quinnipiac got off to a solid start and led 4-3 after the end of the first quarter behind four different goal scorers. Sophomore midfielder Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.) tied it at 1-1 and D'Antonio came around from behind the net to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. After Princeton tied it 2-2, freshman attack Jake Satterley (Babylon, N.Y. - pictured) scored his first collegiate goal on a dive in front of the crease to make it 3-2. Princeton tied it again, but Feldman ripped one in to close out the opening stanza and extend his goal-scoring streak to 14 games.
The second quarter saw the Tigers outscore Quinnipiac 6-1 to take a 10-5 lead into halftime. After Princeton scored the first two goals of the frame, Feldman bounced one under the crossbar for his second goal to tie the score 5-5. Charlie Durbin broke the tie for the Tigers and capped off a first-half hat trick to make it 9-5 later in the quarter. Michael Sowers ended the half with his second goal, capping off a 5-0 run to make the score 10-5 at the break.
Quinnipiac held a narrow advantage in shots for the game (40-35) as junior faceoff specialist Will Vitelli (Milford, Conn.) was 15-of-24 at the X. Feldman finished with four goals, Cuomo had three, D'Antonio had two goals and an assist, and Carchietta had a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Joe Zukauskas (Southington, Conn.) had 11 saves for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac will be next in action when it hosts Hartford on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Yale's Reese Stadium.
