NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team used a 4-0 fourth quarter run to take a 9-8 lead with 4:19 to play, but Hartford responded with the final three goals to earn an 11-9 victory over the Bobcats on Saturday night at Yale's Reese Stadium.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 1-4 on the year heading into conference play next weekend. Hartford, which fell twice to Quinnipiac last year, including 14-9 in the NCAA Tournament, improves to 2-3 with the win.
Sophomore midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.) led the Bobcats with two goals and two assists and figured prominently in the late run. After freshman attack Jake Satterley (Babylon, N.Y.) stated the 4-0 run with an unassisted goal, and junior midfielder Ryan Lawson (Niskayuna, N.Y.) closed the deficit to 8-7, Carchietta knitted the score when he circled all the way around the net before firing home a shot from five yards out. He then helped give the Bobcats the lead on an extra-man opportunity, finding junior attack James Byrns (Massapequa, N.Y.) in front of the cage with 4:19 to play.
Just over a minute later, though, Hartford answered as Griffin Feiner scored his second of the game to tie it back up 9-9. After winning the face-off, the Hawks took back the lead when Alec Brown scored an unassisted goal, his fourth of the game with 2:26 left.
The Bobcats won the next face-off and had a couple good chance to tie, including a low shot from sophomore midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) that was saved by Ryan Vanderford. The Hawks then leaked out in transition against a scrambling Quinnipiac defense and Zack Elkinson broke in alone with 53 seconds left to seal it.
The first half featured alternating 2-0 runs from both teams. After Hartford went ahead 2-0, the Bobcats used goals from Carchietta and sophomore midfielder Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.) to pull even. After Hartford went up 4-2, junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Kevin Diehl (Towson, Md.) scored to knot it up 4-4 with 6:18 left in the second. Brown scored the final goal of the half to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead at the break, and Hartford scored the first two goals of the second half to pull ahead 7-4 before Cuomo scored to close to within 7-5.
Feldman extended his goal streak to 15 games, but scored on the only shot he took of the game after coming in second in the nation in goals scored at 4.0 per game. Cuomo's goal extended his streak to 12. Freshman goalie Joe Zukauskas (Southington, Conn.) had seven saves.
Quinnipiac opens MAAC play next weekend when it hosts Monmouth for a 7 p.m. contest at Reese Stadium.
