QU Baseball Falls To Rhode Island, 15-5

KINGSTON, Rhode Island – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to the University of Rhode Island, 15-5, in a non-conference match-up in Kingston, Rhode Island. With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 7-14 overall while Rhode Island improved to 11-10.
Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) was 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored while Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut), Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) and Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) all collected two hits apiece. Batten and Burns also drove in runs, as did Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) and Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut).
Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead with a four-run second inning, followed by three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 lead. In the fifth, Palladino led off with a single to center field before being retired on a fielder's choice that allowed Moskey to reach. Batten moved him over to second with a single before Burns' single to left center scored Moskey and moved Batten to third. Scafariello's sacrifice fly ball plated Batten to pull Quinnipiac within seven runs, 9-2.
In the sixth, Oestreicher singled through the left side of the infield and then advanced to third on a double to right center by Aron Fried ( ). After Palladino ground-out to third, Moskey singled to score Oestreicher before Batten's RBI single made it 9-4. In the seventh, Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) singled with one out before moving into scoring position when he stole second. After Ben Gibson was retired for the second out, Oestreicher delivered with a RBI single to score Nelson and pull Quinnipiac to within four runs at 9-5. URI responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and a grand slam in the eighth sealed the Bobcats' fate.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it hosts Marist for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 1 and Sunday, Apr. 2.
