NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team scored four times in the final eight minutes to try to dig out of a big hole, but came up just short as Detroit Mercy came away with an 8-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Yale's Reese Stadium.
Detroit Mercy improves to 4-6 overall and remains perfect in the MAAC at 2-0. The Bobcats, meanwhile, fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in league play after dropping their last four games by a combined nine goals.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead 50 seconds into the second quarter on a goal from junior midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.) but were held off the scoreboard for a span of 36:10 before junior midfielder Ryan Lawson (Niskayuna, N.Y.) finally ended the drought to pull Quinnipiac within 7-3, ending a 6-0 Detroit Mercy run.
The Titans got that goal right back just 1:08 later as Adam Susalla scored, and the score remained 8-3 until the Bobcats scored three times in a span of 3:34 to get it down to a two-goal game. Junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) started the run off a Lawson feed, extending his goal streak to 17 games and giving him 99 career points, while making the score 8-4 with 4:34 to go. Senior midfielder Kevin Diehl (Towson, Md.) then scored from long range with 3:05 left to pull within three, and junior midfielder Ryan Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) scored off a rebound with exactly 1:00 left to give the Bobcats some hope.
After winning the ensuing face-off, the Bobcats had four shots at goal to try to close to within one, but Detroit Mercy goalie Jason Weber stopped two of them and the other two were off target as the Titans were able to run out the clock and hold on for the win.
The score was deadlocked 1-1 after the first quarter, with the Bobcats getting an unusual transition goal with defender Riley Palmer (Oshawa, Ontario) scoring off a feed from long-stick midfielder Adam Bellamy (St. Catherines, Ontario), a pole-to-pole connection.
Senior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had a big day in goal to keep the Bobcats in striking distance, finishing with 15 saves. Weber had 11 of his 13 saves in the second half for Detroit Mercy, which had a 41-27 edge in ground balls.
Quinnipiac is back in action next Saturday when it takes on Manhattan for a 7 p.m. road contest before playing their final home game on Saturday, April 8 against Marist at 7 p.m.
