Abbey Long Tosses Three-Hit Shutout Against Murray State

NORTHRIDGE, California - The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader on the final day of the Cal State Northridge Tournament, beating Murray State, 2-0, and falling to Cal State Northridge, 8-0, at the Matador Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

With the split, the Bobcats move to 7-13 on the season.

In the first game, Quinnipiac was able to defeat Murray State behind Abbey Long's (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) brilliant performance on from the pitching circle. Long tossed a complete-game shutout, giving up just three hits and walking one player,while striking out two batters.

The Bobcats' offense did not let Long's performance go to waste as Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) and Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) each chipped in an RBI for run support in the win.

After two scoreless innings, Quinnipiac was able to get on the board first. With one out in the top of the third, Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) was hit by a pitch, then Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) singled up the middle to set up runners on first and second. Drake then stepped to the plate and singled to third, scoring Magana to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

Quinnipiac tacked on an insurance run in the fourth after Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) started the inning with a walk, then Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) doubled to left to set up runners on second and third with no outs. Two batters later, Heimbach singled to left to drive in Larsen to secure the Bobcats 2-0 win.

In the loss against Cal State Northridge, the Matadors shut down the Bobcats, only surrendering two hits. Magana went 1-for-3 and Heimbach went 1-for-2 in the loss.

Quinnipiac will be back in action on Friday, March 24, when the Bobcats take on LIU Brooklyn in the Bronx at 3 p.m. Quinnipiac will then host Wagner in a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m. The Bobcats will conclude weekend play against Maine on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Fairfield, before taking on Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m.
