SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior starter Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Conn.) allowed no earned runs over 5.1 innings to get the win, and senior second baseman Joseph Burns (Shelton, Conn.) hit two of the Bobcats' five home runs, as the Quinnipiac baseball team evened this weekend's three-game series with an 11-3 win over USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon at Harley Park.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 7-9 on the season, while USC Upstate falls to 10-11 with the loss. The two teams will play tomorrow in the rubber game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. after the Spartans took the opener yesterday 5-3.
Quinnipiac led 3-1 through five innings, before taking control with three runs on two homers against the Spartan bullpen in the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Liam Scafariello (Southington, Conn.) led off with a solo homer, his eighth round-tripper of the season, to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead. Sophomore left fielder Brian Moskey (Higganum, Conn.) followed with a single, and senior second baseman Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) belted a two-run homer to stretch the lead to 6-1. Burns (Shelton, Conn.) then hit the first of two homers, a solo shot with two outs in the seventh, to push the lead to 7-1.
USC Upstate's Hunter Gilbert ended the stretch of seven unanswered Quinnipiac runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, and the Spartans tacked on another run on an error to make it 7-3. The Bobcats bullpen came up big twice to leave the bases loaded and prevent further damage in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Freshman reliever Nick Paasch (Tolland, Conn.) left the bases loaded in the seventh with a key two-out strikeout of USC Upstate's J.J. Shimko, who represented the tying run. Junior Mike DellaMedaglia (Somers, N.Y.) then pitched out of a two-on, none-out jam in the eighth, striking out two straight batters and getting the final out on a fly ball to left with the bases loaded to keep the score 7-3.
Burns then salted the game away with a three-run blast in the top of the ninth, putting the Bobcats ahead 10-3. Moskey added a solo shot, the fifth homer of the day for the Bobcats, to make the final 11-3.
USC Upstate got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an unearned run off of Luciani. Brett Hawkins reached on a one-out walk and came home from second on a two-out error to draw first blood. The Bobcats answered in the top of the second with two unearned runs of their own, as Nelson drew a one-out walk and came home when USC Upstate's center fielder misplayed a fly ball off the bat of freshman catcher Evan Vulgamore (Bow, Mass.). Junior designated hitter Julius Saporito (Manalapan, N.J.) then followed with an RBI single to give Quinnipiac its first lead 2-1.
Luciani helped keep the score 2-1 in the bottom of the third with some clutch pitching. After allowing a leadoff double to Hunter Gilbert, the Spartans sacrificed him to third, before Luciani retired the next two batters on a comebacker and a strikeout to leave the tying run stranded 90 feet away.
Saporito helped Quinnipiac add an insurance run in the fifth, when he led off with a double, making him 2-for-2 on the day. One out later, senior center fielder Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) traded places with him with an RBI double to center field to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.
Luciani pitched into the sixth, allowing a one-out single for only his fourth hit of the day in 5.1 innings, before giving way to his bullpen. Eight different players had hits for Quinnipiac including five players with two, as Burns was 2-for-5 with two homers and four RBI, Scafariello finished 2-for-5 with a homer and a triple, Moskey was 2-for-5 with a homer, Saparito was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and senior shortstop Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) was 2-for-5.
After concluding the three-game series with USC Upstate tomorrow, the Bobcats will be back in action in the Northeast on Wednesday for a road contest against local rival Yale.
