NORTHRIDGE, California - The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader, falling to Boise State, 25-12, then defeating CSU Bakersfield, 3-1, on the final day of competition at the CSUN/LMU Tournament on Sunday.
With the split, the Bobcats move to 6-7 on the season.
Despite losing the first game, Quinnipiac's offense mustered 12 runs against the Broncos. Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) went 3-for-4, including a solo home run that accounted for one of her two RBIs. Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) also launched a two-run shot and Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) also contributed a game-high four RBIs in the loss.
The Bobcats were able to bounce back for a big win against the Roadrunners later in the day.
Bakersfield struck first in the top of the third on a daring double steal of second base and home. However, that would be the only run Quinnipiac would allow in the game, as Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) tossed a gem as she went the distance. In her seven innings of work, Long only allowed four hits, while striking out six.
The Bobcats were able to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth after Drake led the inning off with a double, then two batters later Larsen tripled to score the run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Quinnipiac seized the lead for good. Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) led the frame with a single, then three batters later Larsen lasered a two-out double to right field, scoring Czaja. Courtney followed with an RBI single to secure a two-run lead and the win.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Wednesday, March 15, as the Bobcats will still be in California to take on the University of California Riverside in a doubleheader. The games are scheduled for 11 a.m. pacific (2 p.m. eastern) and 1 p.m. pacific (4 p.m. eastern).
